I have an '89 E-350 , 7.3 with a c-6 behind. rpm's are just too high for long trips. What tranny would be a good swap? If there is any, are there any major problems in swapping it out to a 4 speed, etc..?
The only things to do would be to add a Gearvender overdrive to the C-6 or put a higher gear in the rear end. To much work to put an E4OD in, and they are junk trannies anyway.
or convert the van to stick shift wich would be an anful lot of work and take some real ingneuity. but would be pretty darn cool. ya would have to use an over drive tranny like a zf out of a pickup truck.
My problem is that its a church mini-bus. Multiple drivers, so-on etc..
out of the 3 that drive, i'm the only one that can drive a stick. Just trying to find a solution that will remain auto but knock the rpms down. One thing I didn't post yesterday was that the axle is a 4:10 ratio. Thanks for your replies.
well ya could defintly lower that rear axle ratio down and gain some. counting ya dont tow anything with the van or haul very much weight in it. iam amsuming ya just haul people.

What is a Gearvender overdrive? How does it attach to the transmission and how much do they cost? Would the driveshaft need to be modified? I'm looking to improve the mileage on my 1988 F250. I thought about finding a 5-speed truck exactly like mine and swapping everything over, but thats a lot of work. If I could get an overdrive for the c6, that would be an easy way out.
Gear Vendors is one of the few that produce an add on overdrive unit. It mounts to the rear of the transmission or transfer case, whatever your need. It will not work for four wheel drive, only rear axle drive. They average around $2000, and require a little custom fitting, such as driveshaft shortening, but aren't that big a deal. They come with all the equipment to mount it up, and instructions.
