Post Fuel pump hum

H,
Sounds like we agree on some things. But . . . . .
That FP was made in USA w/ US components. I won't buy a part made in Asia
(w/ exception for Japanese parts) or USSR. I just replaced a fan clutch from AZn
which is also US made.
RE: they're hoping you'll forget where you bought it. Recently, like the past three
or four years AZn keeps the warranty data on their computer, so you don't have to
remember if you have it under warranty. Personally, I still keep the receipts in my glove box.

I've been using the NAPA carbon brake pads and have gotten them exchanged so
many times, I can't remember how many.
Best pads in for stopping power!
I have use Napa's O2 sensor also. (Sorenson) Also, some of the Napa parts are the
same brand parts sold elsewhere, but at a lower prices. Felpro gaskets for example.

As far as a part like the FP crapping out when your in the woods, it wouldn't matter if it was
from Ford or US made aftermarket mfg. You are still stuck for a while. Ford don't guarantee
their parts so you would spend $$ to replace it.
If you need help use AAA and carry what tow truck drivers have; cell phone, CB & RF transceiver.
I had a front seal go out on my E4OD halfway between Mojave and Ridgecrest on rt 395, tell
me about the inconvenience! And yes it was a factory Ford reman tranny, the third one!!
Factory Reman because Ford won't sell you a new one.
Ford remans do have a 6mo/18k mi warranty.
So, according to your philosophy, I did go blue on a road stopper and still suffered the consequences!!

You're right about vehicle ownership duration being three to four years. This kid has owned
his 90EB Bronco since new as well as a 83 Mits Starion and a 94 Dodge Dakota 5.2L 4x4,
all since new and not intending to sell or get anything for a while.

By the looks of these forums, there are quite a few out there looking to keep their older
vehicles in parts. I just wonder what a poll would reveal in terms of dealer parts vs. aftermarket?
Mr Moderator, are you listening? If you are, a polling on aftermarket parts quality/reliability
is going to be a winner also.

Ron

Bottom dollar US components and rebuilds are not exempt from poor quality.

>RE: they're hoping you'll forget where you bought it.

Absolutely correct and I still keep the receipts, too. That doesn't change the fact that the average Joe may forget where he bought it or forget about the warranty (or forget his phone # from 4 years ago if he's moved since). AZ has told me they MUST have the phone # that the warranty originated under.

>I have use Napa's O2 sensor also. (Sorenson)

LOL, I bought my 02 sensor from AZ, they have the best prices on Bosch sensors ($41).

>Also, some of the Napa parts are the same brand parts sold >elsewhere, but at a lower prices. Felpro gaskets for example.

See above. AZ is also a good source for Timken bearings.

>As far as a part like the FP crapping out when your in the woods, it >wouldn't matter if it was from Ford or US made aftermarket mfg.

It would if you play the odds. The chances of a quality pump failing are FAR less.

>If you need help use AAA and carry what tow truck drivers

I prefer to be self sufficient whenever possible. Cell phone and radio is always good for a last resort. But if I can carry spare parts and/or run quality parts to MINIMIZE the chance of problems, that's the better option. Thinking the cell phone will save you every time is not something I wanna do. What if you can't reach any friends? What if parts houses are closed?
Now, regarding tow trucks, does AAA cover exceptional recovery fees, as in when the tow truck must be lifted and locked f&r just to get to you? I understand fees are generally $300-500 per hour for such recoveries, generally w/a one hour minimum.
I run enough areas where stock 4x4 tow trucks could never reach me. Plus when in such areas you can't exactly call the wife and have her hop in the family mini van to bring you a new fuel pump.

>So, according to your philosophy, I did go blue on a road

Oh please, as if "my philosophy" states that quality parts NEVER fail. Everything CAN fail - again, it's about the probability of failure in my book.

>I just wonder what a poll would reveal in terms of dealer parts vs. >aftermarket?

That would be easy. My fp lasted 10 years, my AZ fp lasted 4 months. My starter solenoid lasted 12 years, my Niehoff solenoid from Checker lasted 6 months before locking up and draining my battery entirely in 25 degree weather. All 5 AZ master cylinders leaked in the bore. I just started bench bleeding them in the store as the employees handed me one after another (even their "new" one leaked). My fan clutch lasted 12 years, I replaced it w/an HD unit from Napa (finally got smart).

The water pump on my daily driver lasted one year (again, "new") from AZ. They gladly warrantied it but I'm not into replacing a water pump once a year. Same thing happened to my buddy on his Lincoln, AZ water pump lasted one year.

My buddy in Albuquerque replaced the fp in his '87 Bronco w/an AZ unit. 6 weeks later it was running poorly and he was stumped. He took it to a shop who diagnosed that the fp was not building enough pressure. He told them he had just replaced it and the first words out of their mouth was "you bought it from AZ, didn't you?"

I just got off of the phone with Napa. They offer 2 different pumps w/2 different prices. "We offer two different pumps so the lower priced pump will be competitive w/ AZ and others and the higher priced pump...that is OEM quality....which one do you want?" I'll spend the extra $30 and get the better quality, thanks.

I'm also still going to cut the access panel for future problems. You never know.

Now there's a smart individual That's funny that Napa is doing that.

Totally. I don't see why you WOULDN'T take the extra 1/2 hour to hour to cut an access panel while you've got the tank dropped, esp if you plan to keep the truck for several more years. It's cheap, cheap insurance and will make future fp replacement a 20 min ordeal (great for dropping in a new "lifetime warranty" unit every couple months LOL). Hell, you could even do it in AZ's parking lot if you can drive the truck that far!

Fuel pump hum

well since we're on the topic of fuel pumps I have a question for you guys. 85 Bronco 302EFI, its having trouble starting now on the first try, and sometimes the second. If I do the key trick, turning the key to ignition a couple times before starting the car it starts right on up. Am I looking at a fuel pump problem? Also if I am can i get away with just replacing the auxilary pump beneath the drivers door?
Thanks Dave
