I have a 99 E-150 that hums every once in a while. When it starts humming it will continue untill it stops on it's own or when you give it some gas. Also my air vents seem to not be putting out a lot of air. The vents will also shif on their own when the engines revs up when the tranny downshifts climbing hills or when the overdrive is off when I pull my trailer. Other than those two issues, the van runs great with no problems. I'm possibly thinking a vacuum leak somewhere. Any advice will help
Not a lot of info to go on about this hum---could be a number of things, first one comes to mind is the blower motor itself. Does this hum follow blower speed as set by the dash control?
You definitely have a vacuum leak for your vents----symptoms are classic. That leak can be anywhere between the reservoir's inlet to the distribution plumbing---no one particular place I've found more likely than another to be the problem. You need to locate each vacuum motor/servo and check if they're connected, if there is a noticeable leak within sight. If all is good there next area would be the electro/vacuum control---there is a connection block on that switch itself along with a short bundle of hoses leading to the inspection area viewed under the center dash pop out plate.
I can supply a few photos if that would be helpful but only if you're interested.
The vent issue is likely the back flow valve, it goes between the engine and reserve canister, keeps the vacuum from bleeding back to the engine when the pressure drops as the engine RPM increases, that canister is to keep vacuum operated items functioning until the engine starts building vacuum again. The real aggravation is defrost and rear heat are default, so in the summer, when you have the AC on, you will really notice the issue, I've had it 3 years, can't get to it myself to repair it, and the dealer charges over a grand because it's not an easy access repair. I'm guessing the humming is a vacuum valve, could be on the top of the dash under the center panel, you could have a leak there, check there first.
