Hey guys. I got my cackle-cure mod kit from Jason late last week, but didn't want to install it until I captured some sound clips under existing "baseline" conditions to use for comparisons between "Before" and "After".
I've attached a file that shows the graphic from my recording this morning during my "cold start and idle".
Ambient was about 50°F. I started the recording device before switching on my ignition. One note, here... I don't wait for the "wait to start" light to go out... I just hit the switch and start it up like a gasser (seems to really start faster and better that way for me).
Anyway... look at the cound clip graphic. There is a surge of sound at startup, but it very quickly dies down and settles into a rythm within a few seconds. Funny thing is that you really can't hear that difference either in the recording or in person, but you can certainly see it graphically. Must be the engine coming to terms with the world after being woken up. <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype class=inlineimg title='\\"Stick' stroked='\\"f\\"' filled='\\"f\\"' path='\\"m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe\\"' src="http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif" alt="" border="0" o</v:shapetype> I'm going to do a whole lot more recording and analysis on this setup the way it is, and the I'll put in teh cackle-cure mod and re-check the same conditions for comparison. THEN, I'll install my HPX hose and make another set of comparisons.
THIS IS FUN!!
I can email anyone the wav clip if interested. I couldn't figure out how to attach it in the forum thread.

Pretty neat little graphic. I'm willing to bet that your results will be: with the HPX, your idle will smooth out faster, and with the fuel system mods, you'll quiet the engine down a little more.
The little sound capture utility that I'm using will also let me plot a frequency distribution as a plot of "amplitude" (decibels) versus "sound frequency range" (Hz).
I expect to see a portion of the distribution curve "drop out" or "siginficantly decrease in amplitude" once i put those components on the engine. It will be neat to see where in the frequency range each falls, and how much change in amplitude can be detected.
So far, I've made some capture at cruise speeds of 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 mph, as well as during some acceleration runs with the pedal on the floor from 0-72, 40-70, and 70-90mph. I would love to get some clips while cruising at 90 and 100mph, but that's a lot more cagey and I'm really hesitant to try those out right now.

I use Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) for sound editing. It does the same type of display and also has the spectum analyzer and other cool looking ways to look at the sound.
So where'd you get the cackle kit from? Is it the "hutch mod" that's supposed to also reduce injector noise? I'm just getting started on all my mods, so if this isn't the hutch mod, then it's something I haven't heard of yet...
I managed (only by purely being in the right palce at the right time) to get into a beta testing group with Jason of Dino Fuel Alternatives (one of our site's newest sponsors). He has developed what he calls a "cackle-cure" kit that summarily follows the same principle as the HPX mod, but it is on the fuel side of the injectors. He explains it much better than I can in the link below. I'm still going to do the in-tank mods as well, but when Jason offered his kit to a small group for trial evaluations, I decided to go that route first.
Thanks for the info -- I'll keep an eye on this. As I mentioned, I'm slowly getting through the mods. The next is the MBRP SS exhaust. Then gauges, then DP chip.... But somewhere between all that I'll do the HPX & Hutch/Harpoon, etc, etc. Yeah, the PMS has gotten a hold of me pretty quickly...
I also finally became a 3 year supporter. This site is awesome!
I wish I had tried to do this before I changed my oil back in January and went with the 5w40, because I KNOW that the engine has quieted down very noticeably since then.

If nobody does it before it's time for mine, I'll do one with Audition. I'm switching from Rotella dino to Rotella syn next change, so I'll do a before & after.
My sons and I installed the cackle-cure kit this afternoon. I'm still batting 100 so far.... third fluid modification/repair effort and haven't had a drop hit the ground yet. No leaks at all.
I'll be catching my sound clips and running my "speed/acceleration trials" in the upcoming week, and will be getting my results ready for presentation to you guys.
Good deal 250, looking forward to those. Izzy, not really sure why you want to go to synthetic, especially living where you do. May just want to stick with 15w40. JMO. Save the $$ for the mods and the 15w should serve you fine where you are.
I switched to the 5w40 because I was told by guys on herethat it helps with their cold starts. I changed oil to synthetic last night and notice a difference already....quieter and smoother....
