I am new to this whole Ford, FE, rebuild game. It looks very cool!
I read the FAQs, and the oil mods note. I think I understand most of it.
You drill the oil passage to improve oil flow, right?
The main question I have refers to:
"4) Insert #90 holley jets into the oil gallery in each head underneath the rocker stands. This is only applicable to the stock heads as the edelbrocks come pre-restricted."
Can you please tell me more about this? I don't know anything about the heads, etc.
The reason to do this, is that the stock system pumps a LOT of oil up to the rockers. Much more than is needed. At higher rpms this causes oil to pool up in the heads. With a stock oil pump it's not usually much of a problem, however, when using a high volume pump it can pump a stock oil pan dry. Not the thing to do. Thus, you restrict the oil going up to the heads, so that not as much goes up there, and supplies more to the mains / rods.
In each head there is an oil passage that goes up to the rockers. This near the rocker shaft bolt hole. The oil goes up past the rocker shaft bolt, through the stand, and up into the rocker shaft. What you do is, push a #90 holley main jet into the oil hole in the head. That's it. That will provide enough of a restriction to keep oil from pooling in the head with a high volume oil pump.
What is the purpose of specifying the ARP oil pump piece?
Thanks!
Peace of mind.... Some folks have used others and the results have been a twisted shaft, not a good thing to begin with and no fun to have to fix if it happens.
You can/should use the Holley jets as a restrictor in the stock heads as well, even if using the stock flow pump, just to be on the safe side.
