Cool 1974 F-250 Highboy Manual Trans to Auto Trans

I'm having a hard time finding the proper C6 transmission for a highboy to bolt up to a 460. Anyone have any idea where I could get something like that? Thanks

One that has been behind a 400 or 460.

I've convinced myself that if I ever do another tranny swap, I'm going to spend the extra to put in overdrive. There are so many adapter kits out there to pretty much let you put any tranny behind any motor. If I were doing this, I'd spend the time to put in some kind of OD, there are so many trannys available now in the junkyards, why not?

I'm putting a C-6 behind my 460. Why? Because it's nicer for cruising, IMO.

I have looked into overdrive and probably will do something in the future, but right now I have nice C-6 I got for nothing so I might just spend a couple hundred bucks to go through it. Overdrive will be an expensive swap. For one thing, yes, you can put an AOD behind most any motor, but a 460 will tear it apart unless you upgrade the AOD = expensive. An E4OD will work just fine, you just need to get the tranny and also the $500+ standalone CPU to shift it = expensive. Put a ZF 5-spd in the truck. Probably the cheapest swap if you can get the tranny cheap. And lastly the gearvenders overdrive adapter = $3000= expensive.

But, I agree, an overdrive would be a very nice option. I'm still keeping my eyes open for a cheap E4OD.

The trouble is finding someone who can build a C6 transmission that will bolt up directly. A trans shop in Florida said they can build it and said they would have to get the rear trans shaft housing, but I can't find anyone who sells that particular item. I plan on puting a 650 to 750 hp motor in it when it is done.

Are you wanting to keep your transfer case divorced? If not, all you need is a C-6 from a 2wd truck or car from a 400 or 460. You would then need a custom driveshaft (it would be a short one) but It will work. If you can find a short tail shaft that may be better because the custom driveshaft could be a bit longer. But either way, should work.

A stock rebuilt C-6 should not have much trouble holding your HP. C-6 trannys are damn near bullet proof. My brother has a few upgrades in his C-6 behind his 605 stroker muddracer and his motor carries 1050 HP.

I have a long tail shaft c6 behind a 360 in a 75 f250 highboy all I had to do was fab a tranfer case shifter bracket, move the cross member back a little, have a drive shaft custom made for about a $100 and plug the speedo cable hole works great!

In my previous post, "if not" should have said "if so" and I didn't go back and edit it... just so there is no confusion there.

Bottom line is... A C-6 will work without too much fabrication.

Automatic transmission for a 351C?

Will a C-6 Trans off of a 76 or 77 Ford F-250 4x4 with a 351C bolt up to a 460? I didn't think Ford put a 351C in trucks. Thanks, Ronnie

No 351C's in trucks (except Rancheros). Only the 351M's (& 400's) were used 1977/82, and the 351W's from 1980 and later....

I found a C-6 out of a 76 Highboy with a 351C in it. Will that transmission bolt up to a 460?

So would the guy be mistaking the 351M for a 351C? Was a 351C ever put in a 4x4 pickup?

No trucks had 351C's...no 2WD's, no 4WD's. Nothing.

Welcome to the site.

351C's were put in CARS ONLY back in the early 70's in North America

Mustangs,Torinos.

So if that is really a clevo it was swapped in there.
If it is a 77 then that will be a 351M and the trans will go behind the 460 .

The 351m/400/429/460 share the same bolt pattern of the bell-housing

Post the casting numbers of the intake, block, heads and I'll tell you for sure
what it is.
I have asked that this thread be merged with your original thread.

PLease keep everything together in ONE thread ...otherwise WE have go run around to see what has already been discussed ands that isn't fair to us.

ONE thread per topic.
