Oil pump shaft

Who could tell me exactly what to expect when the above shaft sticks with the distributor as you pull the distributor out? Can it come out all the way, will it fall back into place, or fall back out of place?

If the retaining washer is still on the shaft it should fall back into place. Most of the time these end up breaking off though. One way to know if it fell back into place is to use a ratchet and socket to spin the oil pump shaft. If it builds up pressure then it is back where is should be. If it popped out they aren't too hard to set back in with a magnet and thin flat head screw driver to hold it in place while you remove the magnet. Worse case is the shaft comes out and bounces off the top of the pump then falls into the pan. That would require the pan or timing cover to be removed but you can get it back in place without too much hassle.

Well the retaining washer is still on as it would only come out so far before it was held back. That means either door #1, falls into place,or #2, falls into the pan. Maybe I'll revisit when I replace the dented pan while changing out the old mounts for new ones. With the pan off I don't need to worry which way it goes.

Come to think of it that brings up another question. As I lay under the truck, my favorite past time on a sunny day (It is cool down there), and look at the mounts I wonder what would be the best way to raise the engine and inch or so. Anyone with a tried and true system?

Don't laugh but in times of dire need I have used two 2x4's across the engine compartment with a ratcheting tie down strap the raise the engine 2-3 inches. It's amazing what your fenders can hold when you need them too. I have also used a length of 2x4 with a floor jack on the flats cast into the sides of the engine to raise it as well. Once the engine was up, I used short pieces of 2x4 between the mounts and the crossmember to keep it from sitting all the way back down. Cherry picker is the safest way though. You can't go wrong with one of those.
