this morning i took my parents to the airport and dropped them off. their luggage was in the back. when we got there, i rolled down my newly fixed rear window, and unloaded their stuff. then i close the tailgate, but the windows would not go up. i open it a close it again and still it doesnt work. so i just leave it for the time being and go home.
so this afternoon i take a voltmeter out to check if my newly fixed motor is dead, or what. so i close the latch on the tailgate to make it think the tailgate is closed. then i try to roll it up again. no dice. so i unplug the motor and connect the voltmeter to the plug that supplies power to the motor, hit the switch and nothing show on the voltmeter.
so i check the wires going into the tailgate. and i get 12.95 volts. so power is going into the tailgate just not from the switch to the motor.
most of the time this would not be a problem. the problem lies in the fact that i go back to college this weekend and i cant have my rear window down at school. unless i want ****, trash, animals, etc in my truck.
anyone have any ideas??? so far the one thing i have thought of is to just cut the wires going to the latch and twist them together so it always thinks the tailgate is closed. would this work????
Dont know but it sounds like it would work.sound like the switch that senses the gate shut is bad? could be easy to replace. If the switch is not bad that would have to be it unless your grounding out somewhere.
that is not really saying alot but that is all i can think of
There is a limit switch inside your gate..... You'll have to pull the access panel to get to it, but it may very well be your problem. If not defective, it may have come loose and needs reattaching or readjustment. If not this, I might suspect the motor. I know it was just serviced, but has something gone wrong with it? I would think that, if the dash switch nor the gate switch will operate the window, yet you're getting 12V to it, the problem would lie in either the limit switch or the motor.....
There is a safety switch that keeps the window from going up if the tailgate is down or open. It is operated by the pins that the tailgate latches onto. There should be little plastic pieces that are on these pins just like the door pins it holds the door tight if your doors rattle this is why it is a common Ford problem. The pin on the driver side is the one you should look at. Either buy new pins (about $10.00 ea), a repair kit (about $5.00 for both), just wrap the pin with electrical tape or drive your shoulder into the tailgate by the key lock and then try to raise the window. Hope this helps and Good Luck,

Here is what you need to do. I am a security system tech, and deal with these problems all of the time. Most likely, the switch is bad. Take a multimeter, and switch it to CONTINUITY. On the switch, there should be two pins. Place each lead from your meter, on each pin. You should have not tone. Then, press the button. If the button is good, you should get tone. If you don't, that proves that your switch is bad, and will need to be replaced before the window will work.
When you opened the window at the airport did you roll it down with the key or the dash switch? Mine the dash switch no longer returns by itself and if it is not in the center position then the key won't work (even if it is only off by alittle bit) Try turning on the ingnition and seeing if you can get it to work from inside.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Aug-02 AT 12:34 PM (EST)]My window was actually stuck open when I bought mine... in order to figure out what was wrong with mine, I disconnected the motor (should be a connector inside the middle of the tailgate) and ran power straight to it. My window went up, so thankfully the motor was working. After much tracing of wires, and checking, it turned out to be the tailgate switch AND the sensors. I bypassed all, and now it works great. Not saying that you should bypass everything, but it could be a lot of different things, and one way to check the motor would be to put power to it. If you have help and/or are very careful about supporting the window, you could try this with the tailgate down in order to access the wiring. Would save disconnecting the window, and let you know if the motor is working at the same time.
To get the window up so you can get to the access panel:
Using the key, press HARD on the top left side of the tailgate with all you've got while someone else turns the key to raise the window.
UPDATE: i tried all i could to figure it out, and i didnt fix it. so now its saturday and i just finished moving into my dorm room.....my truck is at firestone waiting to be fixed on monday or tuesday, and i am driving my sisters jeep.
