I'm looking to build or find a Flatbed for my 88 F-150. The truck is not my daily driver, but i just picked it up from my cousin. Anyone have any pics or has anyone done something like this?
I usually just buy one as . If I take my time into account they can build it cheaper. Most trailer sales will have access to them or equipment dealers. Your basic flat bed will have wood floor (great if you haul stuff)side pockets and small head ache panel (front bed) . I bought new one for 599. 2 years ago . not a clue how much now. A replacement oem bed is around 600.00 up most places. But you can get as fancy as want. There is a semi trailer builder near me will make one out of steel, alum ,stainless put any type of lights, storage etc. But for normal use the plain jane with wood floor is way to go.Good luck on search
I can't dind them with a wood floor. I like that feature too - you can just nail something right to the floor.
OK they had both at time .Smooth steel and wood floor . And even if put reg lumber in bottom the wood was way better to haul stuff on. Didn't slide as easy.
If you can take a look at one on another truck and take some measurements, it should'nt be too tough to fabricate something up. You'll have to do some welding, of course, but any welding shop can rig up the base of a flatbed for you, and you can bolt the wood floor in easily enough. You might also want to think about something in the way of tire coverage, since without a box you'll end up spinning a lot of dirt, mud, rocks, slush, salt, whatever you drive over on both the back of the bed and the rear of the cab. Make sure you have some mudflaps to keep from breaking too many windshields behind you.
Building your own flatbed can be done, but I'd seriously look around to see about getting a pre-made one. Check junkyards to see if you can find a used one that's in decent shape. It will go a long way towards saving the headaches that you'll run into.
