Remote Starter ?

I just got a VIPER 791 XV Remote Starter/ Turbo Timer installed today and have a couple question. How long do you have your glow plug delay set up for? I told them I wanted 6 seconds and they said that 15 seconds was the quickest option. Also what do you have your crank time set up for? They originally had it set for 2.8 secs but the truck wasn't starting every time so they changed it to 4 secs and it worked better. But is 4 secs to long? I am interested to see how other people have there systems set up.

They more than likely installed one of the newer 791xv's with the built-in wait-to-start feature(unlike the older models which required a pulse-timer relay if you couldn't access the truck's WTS circuit). The built-in feature has 2 basic options; input from the wait-to-start circuit, which isn't usable in our trucks, or the preset times of 15, 30, and 45 seconds, which is what they used. The 791xv's can be programmed to wait anywhere from 1-90 seconds, but it requires the use of a BitWriter handheld programmer, and I don't know of to many shops that have one.

4 seconds for the crank time is fine. Our trucks can be a little unpredictable as to how long they need to crank for. The truck has a built-in anti-grind feature, so there's no threat to the starter or engine. Once the engine starts, the truck automatically disengages the starter to keep it from grinding. If you're curious about that, just continue to hold the key in the "START" position after the truck has started. However, if you let go of the key after the truck has started and then try to turn the key back to "START", the starter will grind, so avoid doing that.

Authorized shops for Viper/Python should have the bitwriter.

Adambomb... I have a viper auot start too. Just installed last week. The only problem I ran into was that it needs a tach generator part. When it is cold out it won't stay running. It shuts off and starts again, shuts off and starts again. They said the tach signal is weak and this signal tells the viper that everything is ok. If the signal is low, which happens to be a probplem with 6.0's, it will shut down the motor because it thinks somehting is wrong. I am still waiting for the part. They are back ordered. This doesn't happen when the motor is warm. They set up the wait time for the glow plugs and it has been fine. The motor cranks over fine and doesn't stay engaged. That part works perfectly.

thanks for everyones insite. I will call them tomarrow and ask if they have a bitwriter and the tach generator part.
Another Question, when i was talking with them they asked me what I was going to use this for. I said to warm my truck up in the morning (cold southern california) and to not have to wait in my truck to cool down the turbo. They said, it will do both but the truck will shut off automatically after 12mins when its remote started. Is this true? Is there anyway to bypass this? I know 12mins is more than enough time to warm up the truck but what if I start the truck while im eating breakfast and I get busy doing somthing and it takes 13mins I don't want the truck to shut off.

Adambomb & Skoiv- The Viper has 2 methods to determine if the truck has started; Tach sense and Voltage sense. With Tach sense the Viper uses the learned Tach signal to determine whether the truck has started and to stop cranking the starter. With Voltage sense the Viper cranks the truck for the pre-set time and then "see's" if the truck has started by an increase in voltage. Instead of spending the extra $ on a tach generator and installation, try having the system programmed for Voltage sense first. The Tach sense method has the advantage of "over-rev" protection. But I've yet to hear of an over-rev situation with our trucks. Both methods will attempt to restart the truck if it fails to start the first time. I personally use the Voltage method and I've unfortunately had the opportunity to find out that it works, and does in fact restart the truck.

Adambomb- 12 mins. is the default setting. Without a BitWriter you can program the system to run for 24 or 60 min. using the Menu Items. With a BitWriter you program it for whatever you want. Here's the "Catch 22" with the BitWriter. The BitWriter has to be directly plugged into the Viper's brain, so if they properly installed your system it's going to be incredibly time consuming for them and costly for you, to have them get back to the brain to plug in. Now if they can easily access the brain to plug the BitWriter in, then you know that they just simply stuffed the brain up under the driver's side dash, which is the first place any thief is going to look, yank it down, and disable your system.
