engine pressure washing

Hi All,

I'm not sure, but I think I seen some post' about pressure washing IDI engines.
Can this be done and is it recommended. After 211,000 miles, I need to clean my engine. Any suggestions.

Thanks,
Factoryone

it can be done but the motor needs to be cold or youll damage the injection pump and possibly other things. also dont do it with the motor running. try and stay away from electrical connections and stuff like that. i always spray the engine compartment with a degreser let it sit then take a ride to the car wash and hose it off.(dont want to get grease all over the drive way i have spilled enuff stuff on it lol)

In my experience, these old Fords tend to have electrical problems, so be careful. Also, it is likely that in the process you'll disturb the injector return lines, so be prepared to buy a kit.

The biggest thing is the wash water temp.
Water temp should be at or higher than the IP temp.
Other than that I wash mine often at the car wash, spray everything down.

Hey thanks all,

I really need to clean this engine. By the way, I ordered my exhaust from hypermax in 3.5" however, they nor anyone else has a down pipe available for my '94 IDI turbo. I think I'll man one up. I also noticed a lot of oil leakage on the passenger side rear of the engine and also the fitting at the Turbo. I need to take a better look. Thanks for your help.

Many years ago an 'old' mechanic friend of mine recommended that I routinley wash my engine. He said not only is it easier to work on, you can see if you have a leak, and excess oil and grease eat away at rubber parts. Well I clean my 91 7.3 idi engine every year or so (have since new in 91 and the lat 235,000 miles) and I still have the original heater hoses on the truck.

I blast mine thoroughly. take off the air cleaner and cold air tube for better engine access. throw a rag on the intake and tape a plastic bag over it. I prefer to do mine at home were I have compressed air to blow the water puddle out of the valley pan and the electrical connections. It always fires right up.
