Thumbs up Want instant throttle response????

Probably being a nooobee here I have not seen this thread as of yet....but, probably the easiest way to get response from your baby is to take the slack out of the throttle cable. Just got my truck a few weeks ago and it is the first mod I made. Crawl down under the steering wheel and take a look up underneath the dash where the throttle peddle is connected at the top. You will see the throttle cable coming out of the firewall and the older your truck is, the more that cable will probably be stretched and showing. From more use, no doubt. Just take how many ever zip ties it takes and fasten them on the cable where you see bare cable sticking out. Now you've done the famous "cheap zip tie mod". Rejoice!! Jim

Honestly,
I see where you'd think this was a good idea...but bear in mind that you are in trusting your throttle and thusly your life to a zip tie by doing this. Not only that...by altering the position of your throttle cable you are altering the reading at your throttle position sensor and this may cause problems.

I would caution against this idea...if you are wanting to take "slack" out of the cable it should be done at the throttle body..NOT the pedal. At the thorttle body there are cable clamps that are designed specifically for this purpose and are far better than a zip tie.

He just took up the intended slack inside the cab, not at the TB, so it will not effect the TPS. It's just slack to make sure that the pedal doesn't hold the throttle open any.

Ten four, LXMan! Not doing a thing with the throttle body mechanism at all. Just taking the slack out of the cable, which will stretch with time on any cable. Jim

Thats my point though is that you should take the slack out up at the throttle body and not down near the pedal...because thats where its meant to be adjusted from.

It accomplishes the same thing but uses the hardware thats supposed to be used...not a flimsy zip tie that will become brittle and break as it gets older ( probably while you're driving causing an accident). I dont know about you but I wouldnt put that much trust into a single flimsy zip tie.

Sorry, but you are worrying over nothing. There is no strain on that plastic zip tie. It is just taking up the natural stretch of your cable. Brittle? Maybe you had better start worrying about all the other plastic parts on your vehicle doing the same!

My God! Just passing on the cheapest, most effective mod anyone could make for throttle response on any used vehicle that may need it! I have been active on 2 other Ford sites prior to getting on here and have seen nothing but praise from literally hundreds of people that have used it! Anyone else want to weigh in here? Jim

Yes I have seen this mod done years ago on another Ford site.
No worries!

I think I may have to experiment and try it from both ends and see which gives the best response of the throttle. the only risk i see with a zip tie is if the last one or two were to some how slide up the exposed cable at half throttle some how and caused a stuck throttle, but what are the chances of a zip tie defying the laws of gravity??

I agree, I see no reason to do this useless mod when the engineers already put adjustment hardware on the throttle body.

I checked today on my 1999 while I had the hood open doing other things, I didn't see any way to adjust the cable on the throttle body. maybe I'm just dumb.

However... when the pedal is to the floor, the throttle is wide open. I don't see the point in taking out all the slack and possibly breaking the cable when you mash it to the floor.

That being said I plan on crimping on one small lead ball, like a weight for fishing line, just enough to take out like a quarter inch of slack or maybe even a little less, just to fool myself into thinking my truck's a little bit faster for a couple of days because I'm used to pushing the pedal further for the same result.

I never understood until I just happened to look today and saw the end of the cable sticking out about an inch from the pedal assembly. If you put a ziptie on that(before the ball at the end), there will be less pedal travel before the throttle opens, if you line up two or three it will actully lift the pedal further from the floor.

As long as the cable isn't stretched so badly that pedal to the floor isn't WOT on the throttle body, it really doesn't need to be done.
