I just got a 40 series muffler. THe side that says inlet is the offcenter end and the other end is center. For the muffler to line up with the factory piping, I need the inlet to be in the center and the exhaust exit to be offcenter. So can I mount this muffler backwards?
no you can't, the internal baffles don't allow for it. Did you just get it for the sound or are you expecting a performance gain? Because truthfully a superturbo of the same case size with the same in/out config actually flow better. Mufflers like magnaflow are a far better performance choice anyway.
I will agree with the Magnaflow products being a better choice.
Is there anyway you can rotate the muffler to acheive the offset your
incountering. Or you could return them for the above.
Send it back and get the right one for you truck.
I have Flomasters and love them. I got them because I like to here my truck.
Performance? What are we talking here 1 maybe 2 HP if that. There's not enough difference that you would ever be able to tell anyway.
My point on the performance part was why replace a muffler for $60-80 or more for a "performance" one that flows no better then stock(or the differance is minimal if it is better). Because every truck and mustang guy in North America thinks they are good? You will hear your truck with magnaflow as well and at least get what you pay for. Besides, the only time I have heard a good sounding Flowmaster system was on a 700+ horse Camaro on laughing gas. Then the drone/whoosh sound actually isn't bad. It comes down to the same thing on EVERY forum, somone bashes the "performance" aspect of Flows so people say they have them because they sound "good". Its always the same. I respect people's descisions on buying them. To each thier own but I do like to let people know that they aren't as good as everyone says.
I've decided to not use a muffler. I cut the stock muffler off with plans to put the flowmaster on, but something came up and I couldn't finish after cutting the stock muffler off. So I drove around for 2 days without a muffler, and LOVED the sound. I then put the flowmaster and it sounded like I was going back to stock. I've since decided to just run a straight pipe. The sound is so awesome. I'll try and get an audio link up so that those of you trying decide how to go can hear what no muffler sounds like. I think you'll enjoy
With CrapMasters installed azz backwards might improve their flow, they aren't worth a damn flowing forward this is what two muffler shops I hang out at think of them. One shop gave a me a almost new set to test but to never return then only fill the trash can when done, testing took a few hours then fed the trash can.
They got that high school mentality sound, must be good?
Spintech's or Borla's, Edelbrock RPM's 3rd but they drone.
Go ahead and mount it backwards, and make sure you upload a sound file so we can all hear what it sounds like.
I'll bet your neighbors all LOVE you racing around the 'hood with no mufflers on your ride. I would call the PD and have them come out with the decibel meter, no need to have to deal with that racket all the time. Around here it's all the fart pipe cars.

Louvered glasspacks will choke up as exhaust volume is increased.
A little bit louder is mount them backwards so exhaust has ramps vs
open louvers to catch.
Other style glasspack with perforated inner liner vs louvers which flow better.
Check into Vibrant's large oval resonators, they are 100% stainless with perforated tube.
