having had both I can say the 6.0 kicks the 7.3 hands down even with extensive mods the 7.3 is just not the free breathing easy revving package that the 6.0 is! its like comparing a boss 429 to rousch svt cobra! I have had 5 7.3's & loved them all '88 being the first (traded my '84 6.9) for it, sold for a '90, traded for a '96,traded for '99, & have a '02 450 service body & truth be told I love the low end grunt of the 7.3! but I am totally addicted the pure punch you in the face power of my '07 6.ohmygod! kindest reguards, Jim.
Both these engines have the capability to be power houses but the 7.3L was designed back in the day when displacement was the only way to increase HP, up the displacement and then the HP would go up so thats why its 7.3L, on the other hand the newer 6.0L was designed to be a smaller (cheaper) powerplant that produced more power more efficeintly through a variable turbo. Now I am not an expert on these things but thats how I see it, now I own a 7.3L but if I could trade it in for a 6.0L that would have the same reliability as my 7.3L I would do it in a heart beat. In most cases "Newer is better" but sometimes it doesnt always work out that way.
There is now way that the 6.0 is cheaper to manufacture than the 7.3...
Where are you getting your information???
One word of advise to those that are reading this thread.... I think the only solid information is from those who have had both engines and not from the guys that have ego problems and think that because they own one it is the only way to go.
My thought and yes I have had both and not only that have had several of them. The 7.3 is a very reliable engine in the later models the only negative for those trucks in my opinion is the tranny doesn't hold up well. In the old body style Pre-99 the trucks could get near 20-22 mpg (as they weigh less than the newer body style) The 99-03 tend to get in the 18-19 mpg range.
The 6.0 will run circles around the 7.3 with both in stock form. The tranny is far superior to the one behind the 7.3. There were some bad eggs in the early life of the 6.0 but the later ones are as good as they get...
If you are going to Mod the engines then it is a crap shoot either way. The 7.3 may have the edge because of more head bolts...
Ok..I am not bashing the 6.0L, and yes because of inflation the 6.0L block probly does cost more to produce but thats factoring in the cost everything combined(electronics, Var-vane turbo, etc..). I meant the engine "blocks" in specific, the 7.3L is a tad bit bigger and uses more metal than the 6.0L. And if you read my previouse coment you will see that I specifically said "I am not an expert at these things, thats just how I see it." haha I was just adding my own justification, I did not expect anyone to take it seriously.
In addition: I just want to say that I love the way a 6.0L Turbo sounds, the way it spools up when you start the engine just makes the hair standup on the back of my neck.
I'm not sure of this "emission crap" of witch you speak! as it is not in evidance on my 07 6.0! maybe thats what I had the boy throw in the garbage last month? (bunch of tubes, valves, big muffler lookin thingy, and what I thought was a pretty good radiator but the holes was too big! gee, I hope I dont need all that stuff!
I drive both on a dailly bases and the 6.0 does pull harder, but I prefer my 7.3. On the issue of who is faster, it depends on the driver. I drive a 18 mile long windy mountain road every day and have smoked a lot of different vehicles in the turns. Now I know that I am not faster than an '06 diesel but I just blew by him in that turn.
