I have a small problem with my '99 F-150.
Sometimes the "door ajar" light will come on when I am driving. It will come on when you go over a bump, and if you go over another bump it will go off. The weirdest part of it is, it doesnt do it all the time. Ive never noticed a set of conditions that it does repeat either.
If you pull on the inside door handle, and pull on the door it will go off, but as soon as you go over another bump it comes back on.
If it was just the light that came on and off it wouldnt bother me, but every time it comes on, it has an annoying warning chime.
Ive replace the fuse, and that doesnt remedy the situation.
Im thinking its the door switch.
How do I fix this?
Switch is inside the door latch mechanism (the part in the door that hits the striker on the b-pillar). Spray it out good with some contact cleaner, WD-40, or whatever. It worked for me.

I sprayed some JB-80 in there yesterday. The light came on a few times when I first left this morning, but after about 5 mins it quit.
Hopefully its fixed, perhaps not. It seems to have a mind of its own at times.
Thanks anyways.
That WD-40 trick sure worked on the wife's Taurus. The interior lights would stay on intermittently until the 40 minute batter saver thing kicked in. And it caused delay of the alarm setting as a result. It had been a problem for a long time, the dealer said they couldn't reproduce it (!) and when I saw the posts here I gave it a good shot. That was 3 months ago and not a problem since!
Sure beat having to remove the door panel and all that stuff.
I had the same problem on my 97 f150 4.6 lariat. I originally took it to the dealer and they wanted $200 to repl the switch. I said "no thanx", walked over to the parts desk, bought the switch for $9.90 and replaced it myself. Wish I had know about the WD-40 solution, though !!
hey i had the same problem with my 97 f-150. you are correct in saying that it is the door switch. the switches in these trucks are junk. i am pretty sure you will just have to replace the switch. hope i was some help.

I think the W40 is a temporary fix. But:
HOW DO YOU GET THE DARN THING OUT. Please go read my other post, about door indicator switch. I am in the process of removing it, I have the door panel out but can't release the switch itself. NO replies yet to my post. Please help!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Sep-02 AT 11:45 PM (EST)]I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, I JUST TOOK THE DOOR PANEL OFF AND DISCONECTED THE WIRE TO IT. I PUT A ON OFF SWITCH ON IT AND TURN IT ON BY HAND. FIXED THAT SIDE(DRIVERS SIDE) NOW THE PASSENGER SIDE IS DOING THE SAME THING. :-staun
I removed a lot of those lights and bells and things when i bought my truck. I don't always want to light up like a Christmas tree with bells and whistles. I like my vehicles to be more...stealthy. How did I do it anyway? I forgot. perhaps I yanked out some appropriate wiring, and/or removed an appropriate fuse.
I just purchased a 99 F250 last night. Today the door ajar light stays on. I originally was looking for why the dome light didn't work. Someone had taken the bulb out.
But anyway, where exactly do I spray at? On each side of the door striker thing itself or the door handle on the back door (supercab)? It is the drivers side.
Also, can someone please tell me how to search the forums? I would like to search for the answer instead of posting the same questions over and over but I can't seem to find the link to the the search. The one on the right asks me if I want to download something.
I have a 98 F150 4 x 4 and the same thing was driving me nuts !
I'de park it and still see the dome and door lights on an hour later......so I'de have to disconnect the battery for fear of coming back to a dead truck.
Spraying WD-40 very generaously into the door latches and slamming the doors a few times did the trick !!!
Thanks so much for the article !!!!
