Using those "worm screw" type of clamps typically doesn't work well because the real small ones just aren't round enough to clamp evenly. The factory type clamps actually seem to work pretty good as long as the lines are in good shape (new).

You can block off the line to the filter and it might help, because the check valve may be defective. It's very likely a return line kit would solve the problem, they're not that expensive. Once disturbed, the old lines tend to leak. I went through the same thing...
1) glow plugs not working
2) while fixing glow plugs, disturbed return lines
3) return lines start to leak
4) replace return lines, caps, and o-rings
5) starts like a champ

also what would be the best way to plug the line that runs from the housing to the passenger side front injector?

Hey N8 - The line is the one that comes out of the filter header right next to the air schrader valve. It comes out and goes down right to the top of the #1 injector. Unscrew the hose barb fitting and put a little brass plug in the top. Then take a 5/16" bolt with a no-thread area on the bolt shaft and hose clamp it into the stub of hose and that will eliminate one area where you could be getting air leakage.

Yes, it is common pipe thread. I believe it is 1/8 inch npt. This is a great little fix to do for your truck for easier starting.
