i have a few months left on my warranty. i have a ticking in my engine it is the 5.4 with 28k miles on it , i do not have much faith in my local ford dealers mechanics,i was wondering how technical of a job is it to replace the cam phasers which is what i think the trouble is from all of the posts i have read on this forum, any comments would be appreciated
Are you sure you aren't hearing the fuel injectors working? They are louder on these new trucks than in years past. Besides, if you think you might have a cam phaser issue that is covered under a Ford TSB... a Ford tech will need to do the work.
i don't know if it is fuel injectors or something else ticking it sounds like my old 300 six cylinder how can i tell the difference between fuel injectors or the cam phasers
With the cam phasers, I have heard it compared to sounding like a diesel. If its a constant ticking, and if it changes with rpms.... could be the injectors.
Diablo, the cam phase sensor sound is definitely more of a "knock" than a "tick". When mine were bad, I could hear the knocking from inside the cab with the windows up. If you have a bad sensor(s), it is only noticeable at idle (operating temp., after the oil has warmed up). The noise is also not heard after about 1000 RPM, only at idle. Also, it really does sound like a diesel.
thanks fs-150, my noise is a ticking instead of a knocking sound for sure,i guess it is fuel injector noise everything runs fine i don't guess i have to worry about this anymore thanks
Mine is an 04 and I definately have the tick, but I only really notice it when going through a drive thru and the sound bounces off the store. Does this sound more like the injectors vs. cam phasers to you folks? The truck runs great and I have 29,000 on t.
