Gary.... I've never had a '56 wiper switch in my hands, but try this...feel the back of the switch for a button. Push down on the button (real hard) while pulling on the switch ****. The **** should pull completely out. Then unscrew the nut and it falls out the back. Hope that made sense.
Headlamp switches have buttons, wiper switches don't. Is there a cable connected to your switch? If so, follow the cable to where it ends. There will be a screw that holds it to the motor. Some of the switches are threaded where the end protrudes through the dash, and are held on by the bezel that says "wipers."
>>Picture in book shows small nut that fits into center of wiper bezel that threads onto switch.

Gary E, On my `56 with electric wipers, there is a very small allen set screw that must be unscrewed before the **** will come off. It calls for a special tool to loosen screw nut, but can very carefully use a proper size screwdriver to tap screw loose. Maybe vacuum wipers are different. Don`t know. Hope this helps GUSSO
well there was a flathead screw that let me remove the **** and there is a cross shape in the part inside of the bezel that the shaft goes through. But when I try to tighten or loosen it, it gets tight I am using a screwdriver and starting to strip out the marks the special tool would grip on.
Gary E very possible.. Thats probably why it calls for a special tool.
Sacramento vintage ford has removal tool listed at $7.50 and they have bezel nut listed at $8.50, just for your info. good luck. GUSSO
