Bought a 99 F-250 4x4 with a 7.3 and a 6 speed. It occasionally shifts into 4x4 high, but won't go into low range. Successfully engaging 4 wheel drive is hit and miss. I have heard that the hubs one these are questionable, but that wouldn't explain why it wouldn't go into low range.
Has anyone ran into this before? What's the best way to test for which component? I'm hoping it's not the t-case actuator motor... because those are worth about $800.
Usually it just a bind in the drive line. My truck takes going to neutral, drive and sometimes reverse to get into low. Even in neutral, there can be enough tension in the front and rear drive shafts to keep the electric motor from engaging low.
I just picked this truck up 6 days ago, so I definitely need to get to know it better. Problem is, it's never gone into Low for me yet and half the time it's like it's not even trying.
With the electronic transfer case, it will take just the right conditions to lock in. It's not trying mostlikely because it hasn't seen those conditions. Give backing up and driving forward, Slowly, a try while the switch is in 4 low. It should lock in with a thud.
Do you have ESOF (Electronic shift on the fly, it's a **** on the dash vs. a floor shifter). If so, then you MUST be in neutral and have your foot on the brake in order to shift in and out of 4wd low.
Mine has no trouble going into 4wd low or high. The only time it hesitates is when temps are zero or below, and I'm shifting to 4wd for the first time that day. Then it takes a few seconds for the hubs to lock in place. 4wd low always takes 3 seconds for the light to come on the dash and the transfer case to engage.
This is the reason I had to get a truck from a dealer 350 miles away. I wanted the manual shift Tcase. To get the manual case to shift smooth I put the tranny in neutral(auto) and shift it firmly. I have a Ranger with a 5 speed and Manual shift Tcase. I put the transmission in neutral and let the clutch out, then shift the Tcase firmly.
Mine shifts into low everytime without having to play with it. When at a complete stop I put my foot firmly on the break and presto! Make sure to check your mode select switch and your high to low relay. You shouldnt have to fight it to shift into low. The selector switch should give you 340-380 ohms of resistance when switched in low between terminals 2 and 3
I have the electronic shift style. When it shifts into 4 High, it's almost immediate but other times it doesn't go at all. It's been anywhere between -8 and -34 since I bought the truck but that doesn't seem to be the issue.
