Hi all....just bumped into this forum and I think it's great.
My problem is, that my driver side hub feels like it is trying to engauge all by itself when I am slowing to stop in 2H. I can feel it trying to grab.....I'd like to believe she's just trying to say " lets get off this road" but I suspect that is not the case....She is an 85 full sized with auto locking hubs. My old 79 with manual locking hubs did the same thing and I kept replacing lock outs every year.....I still don't like the super winch replacements....but thats another story. I'd like to fix this with the original factory parts....I just don't know what the problem is.
I am totaly ignorant about auto locking hubs.....what tells the hub to lock when I pull it into 4 wheel drive ???
Do I have a week spring on that side ??
Too much, or the wrong kind of grease can cause enough drag internally to mess up the action of auto hubs. If you dont like manual replacements, try to clean and re-lube them with the special grease from the dealer.
Centrifugal force generated by the axles engages the auto-hubs. I'm considering going to manuals myself. I drove around for a couple of days with just the front driveshaft in because I was having U-joints replaced and rear shaft rebalanced. If I neglected to set the parking break and the truck rolled backward even just a few inches without any torque from the axles, the hubs would unlock and make a horrible grinding until they engaged.
