Recently, the Overdrive OFF button in the end of the shift lever has stopped working on my 2004 Ranger FX4. Has anyone else had experience with this? Can I buy the switch or will I be forced to buy the whole shift lever? The truck only has 42,000 on it.
Hi fflintstone, I don't think it's a fuse. Everything else works OK. When it started acting up, it was intermittent for a few days before it quit. No warranty either...
There is a small wire going over the steering column to the shifter assembly. It is fastened down by a plastic clip-thingy, and over time from shifting it stretches and eventually breaks.
The wires are a bit too small to attempt repair.. the easiest fix is to replace the shifter assembly (which comes with a new O/D button and lever and all.. not too expensive).. not a major repair at all.
In all honesty, I've yet to see this happen on a ranger, but I've done quite a few on F-series trucks.. but I have a feeling this is what's going on with you.
