overdrive button on shift lever
The button on the shift lever works only part of the time. Some times it will hold the trans out of OD and other times the off light will not come on and the trans will shift into OD. where do I start looking for the bad connection? Could it be something else?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Probably the switch/button itself, the button in my 94 was like that. Had to really bear down on it most the time to cancel O/D.
It has to hold the switch "open" to cancel O/D, won't click/lock to physically open the contact and hold it there no cancel.
I didn't tear into it to see why, when I installed the later model column I had to update it a little bit that shift lever went with it. Column I changed to had a nice working lever on it negating reason to look into it further. Might need nothing more than as a good cleaning, act of flush switch out with plenty of electronic cleaner might be all it take to restore function.

When I bought my newest truck the button was missing on the shifter. It's easy to change all you have to do is remove the 3-4 screws that hold the cover behind the steering wheel. You'll see once removed that there is a plug that connects on top of the steer column. It could be pinched or maybe isn't all the way plugged in I had a problem similar to that on another sensor on the truck.
Either way you can get a brand new one off lmctruck or do what I did and went to local pick a part and pulled one from a F150 they are the same in those model years.

You can buy a brand new Dorman equivalent at most auto part stores: Dorman/Overdrive Shift Button Kit (49299) | AutoZone.com
