i have a 91 extended with the a4ld trans. the shift lever is a stick on the floor with a push button ****/handle on top. the push button on the side has broked . even after repeated gluing it still falls off after a while. i was thinking of replacing the whole handle on top of the stick . does anyone know how to get the old handle off? i tried some cautious twists and pulls but it doesn't budge. any clues?
well guys i finally figured it out. you put the shift lever in drive and pull straight up with all your might. then you slam back into the seat still grasping the shift lever. install is much easier. just line up the slot on the lever and push down....i might add if you do not seat the lever far enough down on the stick , it will not allow you to shift out of park once you have moved the stick. i spent 10 min. cursing in a parking lot after i had installed the **** previously on sat.. well live and learn. my mother in-law was visiting so it was good to be out of the house. rick
When all else fails........ Good laugh. Sorry couldn't offer any assistance on this one. Went out and looked at mine and I could see how you would be stumped. The only possible idea I could come up with was the possibility of there being a release ring up under the rubber shifter skirt. Even that looked remote as it would take some sort of special tool to slide up under the skirt to release whatever was locking the handle onto the shaft. So, using your method, if I goofed up and put the shifter into reverse, would I wind up against the windshield instead?
yep, that would be a correct assumption. i checked haynes manual, they suggested same and/or tap lightly with a rubber mallot. i'm glad i couldn't find mine at the time, not sure i would have tapped lightly after all that time pulling. well, ford put it on good! rick
