I've got a tonneau cover and can't see when the tailgate is open. I try and make it a habit to walk around the back of the truck before I drive it anyway - but I don't every time.
Is there an indicator you can get for the tailgate? Maybe wired into the existing door-open indicator?
I've had the same problem in cold weather - I close the gate but it can fall open because the latches get finicky in really cold weather. I like the idea as well....
If you have reverse aid sensors they will stay solid if the gate is down. If you are having issues with it staying latched in cold weather take it to the dealer to have it fixed that is not correct. These vehicles are put through extreme temperature test and it should all work regardless of how hot or cold it is.
It has nothing to do with cold weather and it stays closed and latched. I just can't see it. I drove to work the other day with it open. My son had opened it to get his hockey bag out the night before and forgot to close it. CHIEF4OAL - any details on your idea?

I installed a plunger switch in the bed lip next to the tail light,a little toung on the gate.I ran a wire up to the cab, installed a beeper buzzer near the fuse panel. I put a switch in line to shut it off if I need to leave the gate open for a big load.
