The 73-79 ford trucks VIN plate is located on the cab, not the door. So you would have to swap cabs. If you have the original VIN # and do a swap, you can request a new VIN plate to stick on your cab. As far as the the model of trucks with the VINs on the doors, replacing doors happen all the time and body shops get different stickers.
I don't know about 1977 models, but my 1974 Explorer has a little metal tag attached to the drivers door.
No one will issue a duplicate Rating plate without them seeing the orginal or a rubbing of the original.
It's a legal thing.

I can do a rubbing of the vin plate on the firewall, I just wanted to get the one with the trans codes, axle codes, gvwr etc. would that work?
"If the plate or sticker is destroyed in an accident, it is possible for an authorized Ford Dealer's parts department to order a new one. Both the VIN and the dealers secret parts code has to be provided before Ford will allow a new VIN plate or sticker to be available."
Will they be able to get the tags that I want with proof of the vin?

will the vin tag that I have work for this in order for me to get the sticker and plate for the door?... There is still some of the sticker on the cab, but not much, someone decided to peel it off. Also the truck is a 75... will they still be able to get the sticker and tag?
I'm kinda curious about getting new "original Ford type plate/stickers", my truck somehow lost it's original sticker/plate on the door and door jamb. It has two "California State Replacement VIN plates" riveted on, one on the door jamb/door post, and one on the frame near the pass side motor mount. The VIN decode on the replacement plates matches the truck description. When it gets warmer I'm going to try and find an origianl Ford VIN on the frame. Anyway, would Fomoco really be able to supply replacement original type VIN & rating tags for a '77 truck, or am I better off checking Hemmings etc?
I doubt Ford will supply a VIN plate/sticker for a 30+ year old truck. Most of what can be gotten is less than 10 years old, as the damage it would take to destroy a VIN sticker, would total anything older.
Requests for new VIN's was done by Ford parts departments for body shops. A phone call, a code and the VIN was all it took. But as I said, I doubt there's anything available for anything older than 1996.
sorry about the double post, are the companys in hemmings able to get the stickers if I come up with the information? I don't have a hemmings handy so I can't get #'s to look it up
