Vin # Decoding Problem

Vin# U15GLQ06144

My Bronco is a 77 but looking at the lmc magazine on pg 9 they have a vin decode table. But it seems to me that the Q06144 is from a 73 year model. Am I correct? But my bronco has the inverted y steering and front disc brakes, which only came on 76 and 77 bronco's. Do you think someone changed the title to get it street legal?

What does your title say and does it match the glovebox plate? Strange things are done. 77 will have the fuel doors on the side, that is a 73 Vin#. Vin# is also stamped in three places on the frame, title, glovebox and frame should all match.

The glovebox was completely rotted out and I put a plastic one in a few months ago. Where on the frame rail is the vin# stamped?

Here are two places. Passenger side top of frame about even with starter is the easiest. You may have it registered, but "legal" no. A carefull buyer will not touch it if you try to sell. If the title matched frame, Marti sells reproduction vin plates for the glovebox.

Top of frame forward of second body mount from rear and front rear spring perch. You'll never see it with the body on.

I think I figured it out. It looks like U15GLC06144. The one on the title is U15GLQ06144. Maybe they just got the C and Q confused. But I even showed two other people and got them to read me the number without telling them what I thought it was, and they both agreed with me.

So, that would make it a 76 correct? The title says its a 77, but there is no differences between a 76 and 77 correct?

GFW - I would still like to know where the 2nd piture was taken for future reference and common knowledge. I know your signature says you have a 66 half cab, but in the 2nd pic it looks like it says U15GLL55511. Is that right? That would make it a 1971 wagon with a 302 made in the Michigan truck plant correct? Or is the literature I have incorrect?

Thats just a picture I saved for referance, not any of my vehicles. You look like you are good to go. I would order a vin plate from Marti Auto Works for the glovebox with your title number in case you decide to sell sometime. It gets to be a hassle in some states getting it re-registered. I've sold to Canada and Ohio and they check the numbers to make sure everything matches.

Gotcha, thanks for the advice and the website. Is the plate supposed to be mounted to the glovebox or the glovebox door?

Glovebox door on the left. I'll see if I can find a pic. My 66 is mounted on the drivers side kick panel but only 66 and 67 I believe.
