Smile 6637 Mod complete

Well that was interesting. Just a tip for anyone planning on doing this mod, make sure you can get the filter first before taking your intake apart. No one in my area carries that filter, it had to be ordered and set me back a day with parts laying on the floor. Also I dont know about the cost of 4" exhaust elbows across the country, but my elbow cost $30 bucks and I didnt even get to use it in the end, not enough room. Ended up using a small piece of straight pipe. The first of many mods to come. Got the easiest one out of the way.

Congrats! And welcome to FTE!!

The next step will be to convert your stock intake tube to a smooth "torque" tube. I'm working on getting everything together for mine right now. Some folks call it a "DYI Tymar. Overall, though, your options include everything from buying your own silicone boots and a piece of 45° 4" exhaust for the DYI setup ... all the way to just buying a "Torque Tube" complete. Costs are pretty much equivalent, from what I gather, but putting the pieces together makes the project a whole lot more fun and satisfying in my book. I'm going with the DYI approach.

Is someone selling just the tube to go from the filter to the motor?

I believe that the AFE "Torque Tube" will fit, but am not certain. I've asked the question on here but the discussion quickly got focused on making your own, so i never did get a firm answer. Can probably call one of the sponsor sites that sells it and ask them... they should know for sure.

I still like the idea of making my own, though, being the independent-minded, I-can-make-it-better-and-cheaper-myself perfectionist that I am.

Here's the thread where we were talking about this same thing a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry, wish I had seen your post earlier in the week, and I could have given you some pointers on the Tube for a early 99

Early 99 requires a straight piece of 4" tube where as a 99.5 can accomodate a tube with a 45* bend, with proper manipulation of Sawzall.

Have you done the CCV mod or were you connecting to the CCV return port in the inake tube?

Been outa town. Thanks for the responses guys. The 6637 filter worked as advertised. I will be doing the CCV mod very soon. I would like to change out that accordian shaped intake hose with something a little smoother.

You really don't even need a 4 inch pipe to join the filter and your air tube. Just slide your stock air tube over the end of the 6637 filter. Ya have to force it on there a lil bit but its on there when you get it on. Fits perfect behind the battery with plenty of room.

I just read a thread which mentioned the TAG mod in the turbo intake hose. I was wondering how many of you guys are using this Turbo Air Guide and if it is worth the money? My pre 99 already has the super wheel/ WW. Would installing a smooth intake hose reduce the air turbulance making the TAG an insignificant mod or compliment the mod?

That's a really good question, U26. I've been wondering the same thing lately. The TAG mod isn't one o fhte cheaper ones to do, either, so i haven't even been willing to consider it seriously until I get through my mother planned mods.

In fact, the more time I spend here in FTE, the more I believe that the most important mods we can pursue FIRST are the ones that are focused on improved filtration for the engine's and tranny's intake components (air, oil, fuel, coolant, and tranny fluid). If we can keep the particulate contaminants out of our engine/tranny, it only stands to reason that we've gone a long way towards increasing the life expectancy.

IMHO... These filtration mods often tend to get overlooked by other mods that have the potential to provide more instantaneous power features. I personally believe that approach is a mistake until the engine and tranny are put in the most reliable position possible (from a contaminant protection perspective, anyway). Then again, reliability is most important to me, and I expect that there are many folks who place a higher value on power and speed. To each his own.

Thanks for your input Pete. Hopefully some others will offer up their opinions as well. I would like to be able to come to some type of decision on the TAG, so that I can either add it to my list or disregard it.
