2001 7.3 deisel just DIES

Hello everyone. I hope you can help. I have a 2001 excursion with a 7.3 L PSD. it sometimes just flat out dies at low speeds 25 to 35 which can become fatal to us or somone else since you lose ps and brakes. at Highway speeds it "bucks" but will pick right back up and run fine. 2 Ford dealers said Cam Sensor. Then put it on thier machine and went....DUH...NOPE that isn't the problem. Ended up replacing Backflow sensor "WHICH THEY ADMITTED COULDN'T CAUSE THIS PROBLEM" I'm at a loss and so are they. I've replaced filters and checked everything but nothing seems to help. Do I need to just change out the Cam sensor or can someone point me in the right direction. My wife and kids use this and I'm afraid of things to come if it can't be fixed quick. Any help would be apreciated.

Alot of the guys here carry a spare CS in the glove compartment. Not saying to change it out, but sounds like a CS from what ive been reading on here. Where do you live? what temps are you getting there? If its cold enough it could be fuel gelling. Im sure others will chime in. You may want to post this in the 1999-2003 7.3 forum. You will get more answers and faster as it seems there are more trucks out there than X's

We live in North Texas. We have had a few cold days, but nothing that would cause the fuel to gell. It has been happening at different times, sometimes just after startup, sometimes when its been on the highway for 2 hours straight...no one thing in common. Thanks for the help though, will repost original as you suggested to the other thread.

Thanks a bunch

Here's a tutorial for changing the CPS. I would do it. It's a tad pricey but prices can vary greatly, so shop around.

I would bet one of my dogs that that is your problem...and I love my pack!

It all sound like a CPS issue for now. Use the instructions that Monsta provided above. Also when you have to buy a CPS - DO NOT BUY IT ANYWHERE but on EBay. It retails for $50 plus S&H on EBay (black one). If you stop by international dealer it is around $110(usually blue one), if you go to dealer it could land up at $400! ho, get a spare one too...

Just as a side note:

I had the same sort of problem, random stoppings and power losses, and I spent 45 minutes in bitter cold on a back country road changing out the CPS in my Sunday clothes. I made it home with the exact same symptoms and my repair shop came and picked it up. They discovered that I had sludge in my fuel filter that was actually getting sloshed around and clogging it from time to time, but shutting off the truck would let it settle for abit. Which explains the drive for 2 minutes and then sit for 5 and then drive for.... well, you get the idea. Apparently after 100,k of mileage, the use of deisel kleen dislodged all of it at once.
I just went out and purchased another filter to replace this new one in 500 miles or so.

Not sure if that helps but I figured I'd toss it in the mix.
