On our road trip w/the wife in Illinois headed back to Texas. My 7.3 350 stops accelerating and ultimately dies in a parking lot. Went and bought ebpv sensor and tube changed cam pos. Sensor and still nothing so I had to get it towed. Today dealer says so far it needed a new fuel filter, and icp sensor. They got it fired up but it only runs on 4 left cylinders so now they have to open up the right valve cover to find out why. I just don't want to get taken for a ride by the dealer. Still a thousand miles from home!

Not a bad thing to replace the ICP sensor if it hasnt been done. Hopefully the CPS was from Ford and not a auto parts store. They have been known to be bad.
It is weird that it just died. They should check the valve cover harnesses. If they do a simple buzz test that can tell them weather the injectors have a good connection without pulling the VC's.
Dont let them do anything without checking here first.
Ask them what the ICP and Duty cycle are while cranking. Also if you have not done the hutch mod you might have clogged screens inside the tank. If it sits for a while then starts again you may have trash in the screens that falls out then gets sucked back up when the truck starts.
Also its wasnt bad to change the filter but doubt that was the problem.
They are now saying that everything they checked under the valve cover looked really good injectors and all. And the have a call in to some master of masters tech at some super Ford facility.... All because they still can't figure out what's wrong. They did sayit has good fuel pressure. When it did break down the engine did make a loud sound like when you use either to start a diesel everyone I tried to accelerate. ..
Anything helps being that it seemed like they only had 1 half way trained diesel mechanic! I will recommend this site to them for sure! I've been able to some what work on my truck from advice through this site!
I also had something similar. Truck would only run on 4 passenger side cylinders. Ended up being chafed wires between 42 pin connected and IDM. It wasn't right on the VC, but halfway down the harness, in a place it didn't rub on anything. They ended up chafing on the corrugated protective plastic tubing they were wrapped in. With all 4 cyls on the same side not firing, my guess is electrical. How are the VC connections, inside and out? Have you done the .50 cent mod? Maybe check those connections for burnt pins...
Be very careful or the dealer will start throwing parts and your money at it until either they get lucky or you run out of money.
Next they are going to tell you the IDM is bad, or if you're lucky that you need a new wiring harness under the valve cover.
When they do, immediately hit them with a "I thought you said the ICP sensor was the problem? Am I going to have to pay for all these parts and labor that don't fix my truck? Would this part explain all my symptoms?"
Now, but tell us more about how exactly it acted up and how it died. A loose uvch or one bad injector solenoid could explain the only running on 4 cylinders, but that doesn't explain why it died. Was it running rough before it died? Did it spit and sputter or shut off like you hit the key? Oil level full? Got a chip in it?
has an edge evolution set at stage 2 street, felt like when I pressed the pedal and the engine was bogging or flooded if that makes sense. Wasnt running to rough. Running T6 rotella with only 1k on it. And shut off like it ran out off fuel but fuel level was just over half
When it did break down the engine did make a loud sound like when you use either to start a diesel...
So there's a sound the truck makes when you start it with Ether... and this is the same sound it made when it died?
1: Don't use Ether... ever. A car has a spark to fire the Ether - it is timed at the right cylinder position. Diesel has no spark to time ignition - it times ignition with precise timing of fuel application. You're throwing dynamite into a campfire and hoping it blows at a time that causes no damage.
With that tidbit of information, I'm lost on what's going on in there. Up and dying at 1/2 tank can be a symptom of the pickup foot falling off in the fuel tank, but the mechanic says you have fuel pressure.
Was the noise a bang, a thud, a rattle, or what?
I really feel for your situation. I was 700 miles from home last year when my truck malfunctioned.
Update: So now they are saying that it's a possible hpop problem. I asked if that would only power 4 cylinders, they said it has pressure but maybe only enough to power one side of the engine. But they say it's over $1000 just for the pump. Is that an average price?
Ok, lets back up. Ask them how did they confirm your fuel pressure and report back. I know you're in a hurry, but don't rush to OK what they recommend until you check back here. How much fuel is in your tank?
