2001 Ranger won't start

Yesterday I removed starter from my aero to replace some worn parts and tried to start my ranger 4.0 SOHC.... It is -12 dgr C here, starter cranks the engine, but no start.... It was 1-2 fires in cylinders. but the engine did not fire... I tried to start it in 15 minutes, but no result... When the battery was low, i remooved it for revolt, asked 2 big men to push my aero and it fired well (I have MT5). I had to drive it yesterday and today without starter, parking the van on hills. It is so bad, becouse it is a lot of snow here...

Well... I tried to pull codes from ranger before battery remooving and I can see no codes, that can cause start fault. Just 2 saved codes, but related with tranny.
I want to replace spark plugs... but... what can cause start fault else?

I dont really know how to check fuel pressure (where is the valve), I checked for spark only.

Who can post me location of EEC components of Ranger 4.0 SOHC, 2001, Auto, SuperCab, XLT?

Thanks!

Hidden spark plugs have just been replaced, but 4 of 6 only..... Well.... how to replace #2, #3 plugs (pass. side).... Started on 4 cyl. (#2,3 missfire but after 2 miles these two cylinders fired too). Now runs well.... with 2 old spark plugs...

If your batteries electrical charge is low, it can be weak enough to prevent the engine from starting, so make sure the battery is at full charge.

The fuel pressure test port is on the fuel rail, located atop the engine, between the cylinder banks. It should have a plastic screw on cap, over it, mine is black in color.

Put on safety glasses & depressurize the fuel system, before attaching the pressure gauge.
You can do this by disabling the fuel pump, then cranking the engine for about 15 seconds.

Try Auto Zone's repair/parts location, web site & enter your vehicles particulars & it'll list the location of most of your vehicles parts. If the site hasn't been updated for your model year, try a older year, most parts are still located in the same or nearly the same location.

Let us know how it goes.

If it starts and runs well after replacing 4 of the 6 spark plugs, then there's a good chance the engine was "flooded" and the plugs were fouled out. Once it was running, the other two cleaned themselves up.

It may have just been a fluke due to a combination of the cold temperatures and worn spark plugs, but you may also have a fuel delivery problem.. such as worn/dirty injectors with a poor spray pattern, or too much fuel pressure... or a coolant temperature sensor reading too low... etc. If there is a problem and it isn't corrected, this may happen again further down the road.

As far as replacing #2,#3 spark plugs, you have to go through the passenger wheel well, from the bottom. It's still a tight fit, but with a proper swivel spark plug socket, and some creativity, it's not that hard at all.

Good luck!

I just have to add that I absolutely LOVE the attitude of people in foreign countries sometimes. Here in the US very few people would attempt to drive a vehicle with critical parts removed (such as the starter) and my wife would absolutely FLIP OUT if she ever knew I drove a vehicle with the starter removed. It's just funny to observe the different mindsets of different cultures. People here are so spoiled with convenience, they wouldn't even CONSIDER driving a vehicle where there is the slightest chance they may be stranded...

Then again, a lot of people here wouldn't even stop to help someone who was stranded, even if it meant a simple push so you could jump-start a vehicle.. it's almost kind of sad..

Thanks! I did all the plugs, and Ranger starts well. WIth new armature and rotor starter of aero cranks well too. But today I drive old good aero, becouse it is better on snow (I have 2wd ranger). Well, I want to calculate MPG of ranger. What MPG is normal?

Here in Ukrane it is easy to find help on road from other drivers... In Russia too.

Ones ZR magazine did 1 test. The drow to small towns, country side and replace fuel pump relay with bad one. They tried to stop someone for help....

Some drivers in countryside had OBD-II scannes and fix car for free on road, other tow them to the local dealer.... And it is cheapper to fix car in countryside, then in big city.

Pablo-UA, good to hear you got it fixed & there wasn't anything major wrong with it.

On the mpg question try this link.

Thanks!

Yes, as I can see, Ranger is made in traditions of Ferrari of '30s...

Aerodinamics..? What aerodonamics..?... Ah... Aerodinamics are for people who can't build engines.
Enzo Ferrari.

Ranger runs fust, but when I release gas pedal it looses speed so quickly. Well, it is the truck for low speeds, not more then 80 mph. Like my aero.

Yup, but try to tow 5000 lbs with that Ferrari, or carry a 1660 lb load with it & see what happens!!!! lol

The Ranger does well. that which it was designed to do & Ford got it mostly right imo.

Try to buy a Ferrari with as many equiptment options as the Ranger offers, or for that matter any where near the price advantage of the Ranger!!!!

Then try to maintain a Ferrari for anywhere near what it costs to keep a Ranger up!!!!

Yup a Ferrari will go fast, & you'll look real good doing it, but you gotta have DEEP pockets to look that good & go that fast!!!! lol

Yup the Ranger is a pretty good deal, for the money spent imo.

Yeah! But I need a pass car too. Now I use my very old aero with 600 k on clock with 2nd in her life engine (pushed to 3.4 with Mercedes Mahle Pistons) and the 4th tranny (she had 2 A4LDs, and now she has the 2nd manual 5 st tranny of Volga)...
Unfortunatly I can't import Aero, becouse I can Import truck not older then 7 years, so I want to purchaise Explorer. It is like a Ranger under the hood.

So 1 quation... What engines have Explorers 2000-2003? I sow 4.0 only.
