A funny noise started to appear from the back of the truck.
When I accelerate, it sounds like a bearing going bad. When driving 30-40 mph it becomes a high pitch washing machine on spin cycle, and when slowing down a moaning with a rotating motion if that makes sense.
I know exactly what your problem is!! This just happened to my 90 Bronco. The carrier bearings in your rear axle are about to give out. There is nothing you can do about it. To replace them is 4X as much as it would cost just to buy another axle. If you take it easy you might be able to get another 100 miles out of it. Don't go to far from home. When it gives all the gears in the rear axle drop and cut a hole in the housing and diff fluid goes everywhere. This happened to me off-road. I got home in 4X4. FRONT WHEEL DRIVE!!! Hope this helps
I replaced the whole rear axle assembly! The axle itself cost me $800 including installation. I got mine from a junkyard. I also got a 1 year warranty!! The only way to replace the bearings is to get them from a dealer. You can't just buy the bearings you have to buy the WHOLE gear assembly which costs $1600 plus installation!!
If you need any more info. just ask!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 11:35 AM (EST)]You CAN buy the bearings at most parts stores, and there are a LOT of other things that can whine. U-joints, debris in the brakes, the gears themselves, any of the other bearings on the truck; even a wheelwell rubbing against a tire. Put the rear axle on GOOD jackstands, chock both front tires WELL, & drive it at 30-50mph in place (you can set the cruise control) while you walk around & listen. For safety, have an assistant in the truck to kill the engine if something happens.
Steve83 have you been around too many exhaust fumes lately? That is insane plus if the speedometer works with the truck stationary wouldn't you put alot of miles on the Bronco?(just kidding!!!) The speedometer and odometer are on the front wheels. You may want to run it at a certain rpm if anything. But still I wouldn't trust any jack stand. Take it to a garage with a lift pay some money and be safe.
The speedo/odo is connected to the rear driveline on all Ford trucks. :-X23
What's the big deal? As long as the wheels are off the ground, the truck won't go anywhere, and if he uses decent 2-ton or heavier jack stands on level ground, there's NO chance the truck will fall since the front driveline will be idle. If you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE, just set the rear axle on the stands, set the park brake, and then try as hard as you can to push it off - you'll never do it, and neither will the wind blowing off the spinning tires when you do it with the engine running. I've done it several times myself for various reasons, and I've helped other people (including professional dealership mechanics) do it, too. There's less load on the driveline with the wheels spinning freely than when you're driving, so you're not gonna hurt the truck, either. As long as you don't stick a foot or something into the rear tires, it's about as safe as getting under any other time.
I've done the jacking and spinning test. Its not as bad as it sounds. Just make sure your blocking is solid, try pushing the truck off once or twice to make sure. I strongly recommend having someone behind the wheel! Just incase.... That and when my U-joint was whining it only did it under a load. So while up on stands I had to ride the brakes to put some resistance against the driveline.
How old are your U-joints? Make sure you check all the small stuff first, it's alot cheaper!!
