Where is the computer.

84 Ranger. 2.3 4 speed 4X4.
This truck came from Kansas to Colorado. Apparently it had all the emission items pulled. I got it with no cat, no computer, no air pump. Looks like most of the components are completely gone. This one has a O2 sensor, that's there, but the wire just dangles.
According to the wireing diagram, from the coil there is an extra wire that goes to this computer, the O2 sensor goes to this same computer, and as far as I can tell, the carb is adjusted by the computer as well.
So where is this computer???

I'm probably not going to go this route to fix it. I'll probably pull the exhaust manifold and replace it with the one with an air pump inlet and the air pump. I'd almost guess that this 2.3 is actually from something older. It was rebuilt, but might have been replaced. I do have a new cat to put on it.
And the biggest issue is the pressure hose to the power steering that's leaking. I have the replacement, just been a little chilly around here to replace it.

The only reason I'm asking about the computer is if I can find it, I may use it and reconnect the O2 sensor and go that way.

On my old '90 it was under the passengers side kick panel.

84 doesn't have a kick panel per se. No panel, just a metal one that doesn't come off.
Nothing behind it.
According to the manual, it was suppose to be on the passenger side inner fender under the hood. Not there, time for plan B.

Thanks

I have an old reference book on EEC-III and EEC-IV systems, and apparantly the EEC-IV was introduced in 1984. Unfortunatly, it doesn't give the locations of the computer. It says, however, that the computer will be mounted inside the cab to keep it out of the environment...in the trunk of some cars and behind kick panels of trucks were mentioned, but the book wasn't that specific. Searching Autozones website for component location may help, or even a visit to the dealer to "price-out" a computer...and try to eek out the location from them. As a side note, the controller for my cruise control is mounted above and forward of the glove-box, up under the dash. There's empty space there...could your computer be mounted there? You have to remove the glove box to get access.

According to Alldata. The EEC IV was on the 2.8 L V6 Rangers in 84. I'm looking for the MCU module that was used in 84 for the 2.3L 4 cylinder and the 2.0L 4 cylinders. MCU short for Microprocessor Control Unit, vs. the EEC = Electronic Engine Control. And according to the pictures, it was located on the Right hand front fender apron. I'll look again, but I think it's all gone. Part of the "get rid of the smog crap" done to make it easier to work on.

It's also suppose to have a Feed back carb on it. The carb on it does not have connectors for wires on it either, so that probably has been replaced as well.

Plan B is to rejet it, it really is running pretty rich. Remove the O2 sensor and plug the hole in the exhaust manifold. Fix the hoses to the vapor canister. Put the stock air cleaner and hose back on. Then with the new cat, take it in for an inspection. If it passes fine, if not, I'll look for a exhaust manifold and air pump and brackets to put on.

On my '82 LTD, the MCU was on the drivers side fenderwell beside the Duraspark Box.

This is what it looked like. Notice the melted goo on one of them - that means it's bad. When it goes bad, it will run rich all the time. In fact, you can unplug an MCU and the engine will still run, just rich. The MCU basically takes info from the O2 sensor and decides how to adjust the Air/Fuel to compenstate.

Here's the drivers side.

Here's the passenger side.

If you look close you can see the O2 sensor hanging there.

And here is the carb.
