Well it seems water had invaded my engine, prior to me purchasing. 86 F250 5.8L 4bbl C6
I pulled the carb yesterday, 4180 4bbl. When I pulled the carb the Secondaries were rusted or corroded shut, (I have them soaking) Then I look into the manifold (on the pass side) there looks like a large amount of rust and corrosion inside the intake. On the Drivers side, they had an excess amount of fuel trapped inside.
Should I pull the manifold and replace?
Where could I find a replacement throttle body assembly with good secondaries? Any hints?
Also Not sure if its right but the accelerator pump needle looks to be a ball bearing. (dont think thats right)
Does anyone know of a parts source or have a donor parts carb for a reasonable rate.
I don't completely understand what you need. "A NEEDLE IN ACCELERATOR PUMP" ??? " REPLACEMENT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY" ??? I thought you where talking about a 4180 Holley? Where is the fuel trapped? If this was mine I would dump some ATF down the intake, pull the plugs take a oil can and pump some ATF in the plug holes. To get some lube around the valves, rings, cylinders, etc. You can buy a kit for the 4180 but you need the tag with the Motorcraft # The kits are around $90. I just junked a 4180 the other day. Hope this answers some of your questions. You can email or PM me if you need further help.
I have the same exact drivetrain set up as you, if I were you, junk the holley and get an edelbrock 1406, it hasn't let me down yet, easy to set and runs right out of the box. The same exact thing happened to my carb and intake. Secondaries rusted shut, wouldn't start for crap, pulled the carb and found the intake swimming with gas, at that point, the carb was thrown straight at the trash can....junk. In the below zero temps around here the past couple of days, one pump to the floor and it starts on the first turn...it's always one pump to the floor.
If your carb is too far gone, I would just order a new holley. Something like the universal 600 cfm would work. If you had a mind to eliminate some of the smog stuff(careful about inspections and emissions tests), the aftermarket carb would support that.
You could put an aftermarket eldelbrock carb on it too. Both are fine carbs.
If I switch to the edelbrock, do I need an adapter kit for the transmission linkage? Kickdown for C6?
I am thinking about the switch over. Secondaries are froze up, parts were in the thing incorrectly. It would start fine, right away but was loading up bad.
Yes, you will need the linkage kit if you want the kickdown (passing gear) to work. I think holley sells a carb just for Fords that has it built onto it.
I run an Edelbrock Performer manifold with a 4160 Holley. The Holley from Summit or Jegs is about $259. They come ready to bolt on trans. kickdown included. I have run my 4160 for 3 years with no trouble. I get around 10-11 MPG with an F250 4x4.
I think Edelbrock does have a kit you can buy for the Ford kickdown. Just want to make sure we don't get into a "this carb is better than that one" thing. They both will work good.
It depends, if you're going to go to an aftermarket intake (I would) and carb I'd opt for the no EGR option. If it's there the engine will run better with it more than likely. It's not required, and I wouldn't remove the plate, but I would disconnect and plug it's vacuum source.
You didn't get any water in the cylinders? Several years ago I bought a 4180 on ebay for $10 + shipping just for the float bowls and the base. I've seen several 4180's on ebay, some starting as low as $0.99. I don't know why so many people are "down" on the 4180's. I'm really pleased with the one on my '83 460 once I fixed all the problems the previous owner caused (stripped fuel inlet threads, bent throttle plates, drilled out main jets, wrong power valve, etc., etc.).
IT was running when I pulled off the carb, just not very well. I had a whole mess of hashed out vac lines, and brittle connections, I have opt'd out the emissions for now. Previous owner did some get by work. Evidently the engine took some water at sometime, but is running right now.
I will try running with EGR for right now. see what happens need this truck 2 plow
The truth is the EGR Valve is the only smog device that will give you better gas mileage if working properly. At cruising speeds.
Yes, Edelbrock makes a kickdown for Ford A/T. The reason I went with the Holley is because it was a less expensive way to go, and tuning parts are cheaper.
