I have an 77 F-100 that the alternator has just gone south on me, I would like to convert from the old external regulator type to an internal regulator alternator.
Can this be done, and if so how?
Thanks!
Willie...
yeah you can, all that you have to do is to get a one wire alternator. they have a internal reg, higher amps and all that you have to do is run a wire form the alt to the battery. you can get rid off all of the other wiring that was involved with the external regulator. you can serch around on the internet to find one that fits the engine that you have and for a price that you want, remember that with alternators, you get what you pay for. the reason that I say that is that some of them are pretty expensive but they are good alternators. There should be others on here who can recamend a good one to get
By all means go 3g. Do a search for how. Go to a junkyard and look for a first gen Taurus with a 3.8, it'll bolt right, it's cheap (I paid $35), it'll put out 130amps, and doing the wiring for it is cake. Even though a person can do it without I used a wiring kit from http://pa-performance.com/.
I have a quick question about the 3g vs gm. I did the 12SI gm. At the time, I didn't know about the 3g swap. Is there an advantage to the 3g over the gm?
As far as what is involved with the gm, you need a wire to the starter solenoid and if you have the 3 wire, like mine, you need to splice the plug into the hot wire and one to the guage in the truck.
