I'd allmost bet it's the starter motor brushes. The first clue is that you stated it's an intermittent problem. The other is that the solonoid is ready to fall off.
well, the bolt is missing , i guess that could be a starter that is stuck. the starter is supposed to be only a year old. That doesn't mean that with my previous problem of getting air into the fuel system and trying to get that fixed I didn't overheat the starter but I doubt it. Who knows. I put the batt. charger on it this morning, we will see in the morning.
That starter has got to be smoked! Even if it is a year old if it has had some hard cranking it doesn't take long. I bought a donor truck with a "new" (supposedly) starter installed it lasted 3 weeks. The electroplating was not even dirty. I questioned them and now the story of well "I had to crank the snot out of it to get it started came out" I exchanged it new one works nice.
If you have an Ohm meter or typical meter, check the heavy ground cables going to the engine.
My 88 has two of them running from the negative battery terminals to the front of the oil pan bolts. My truck had similar problems and even smoked a couple of smaller ground wires. The main grounds were very resistive (about 11ohms) way too high and the current draw from the stater tried to gain ground through other means.
These small gage wires just could not conduct the current and heated up. Messsed my radio too.
well guys, i left the charger on all night, went out this morning and the truck fired up before I even got the key to the full start position. Ran like a top and started 2 more times, It wouldnt start again the third time, but I haven't tightened the batt. cables up. Before I started it the first time though I noticed that the lights, including the wait light were way brighter than ever before, thinking maybe dead batteries and cleaner connections might do the trick. We will see over the next week.
