I have a 1998 Explorer that has very erratic intermittent wipers. The wipers work for a few minutes and then start wiping at random when on any intermittent setting. The low and high speeds work fine.
Sounds like it could be the intermittent control unit or possibly the control switch itself if it's getting contact between two interval settings at the same time. Not sure about doing any particular electrical tests on the switch without having a good wiring diagram. One thing to try is see if you get a positive detent feel of the switch when you rotate it to some of the delay interval positions. Does it feel like it is traveling from one setting to the next and being in an actual slightly firm and positive position each time? Or does it not give much of a detent feel when rotated, but gives a slightly unsure feel as to being at the detent or setting? If it gives more of the unsure feel then it coud be worn out and you'll need a multifunction switch. Otherwise you may need the delay control unit which is easier to change.
mine used to have that problem... I lived with it until my turn signals started acting up (would not always work)... replaced the multi-function switch with an after market replacement from one of the local parts places and it solved the issues.
Mine does this sometimes. I can definitely feel the indentions when turning the **** so I might also have a bad multi function switch. Sometimes when I turn the right bliner on I get a buzzing sound until I cut the blinker back off or make the turn. Anyone heard this?
Yes, my 98 Explorer wipers have been taking a few extra swipes in the delay positions lately. I can live with that, but the buzzing (right signal only) started a few days ago. I was able to fix this very same buzzing on a previous vehicle (1992 E150 Club Wagon) by spraying contact cleaner/lube into the multi-func turn signal switch contacts so I'll try that again. Not sure if I can get the spray into the wiper delay contacts but I'll give it a shot. If not, I guess worst case is I need a new switch.

I have a 97MM which developed the buzzing sound when I would signal for a right turn. Someone on this board suggested spraying some electric contact cleaner in there before I started pulling things apart. Did that, the buzzing stopped and that has been about a year ago.
