50 State Legal Exhaust

Purchased a 1991 Ford F350 5.8L 4x4 and had it shipped out.

Arrived without any emissions equipment - headers without EGR or air injection, 3 inch duals, no cats.

I'm going to need to replace the entire exhaust system from stem to stern and could use some advice.

I'm not looking for chrome exhaust tips or a tuner sound.
I am looking for a durable and 50 state legal exhaust system, so that I can register and use this truck. I'm looking for torque and driveability, daily driving and hauling power, not high revving horsies.

ANY advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. The truck had a 3 day out of state limited use permit when it arrived, so it has to go into storage until I can find the right parts/system.

Also, if anyone knows the original exhaust configuration options on the 1991, please let me know.

I'm in California, so I'm not going to have any wiggle room with the Smog Police.

just go to your local parts store and order a complete exhaust for your truck... you may even be able to get the stock manifolds from a parts store through a supplier like dorman or just get some from a junk yard

Dustin, you are correct, and I shall do just that.

In the meantime, if anyone has any advice, suggestions or direction about 50 State Emissions Legal Headers, Cats, Mufflers - all in one set, or separate components - I'm all ears (or eyes I suppose).

I need to get a legal exhaust system on this 1991 Ford F350 5.8L 4x4 Standard Cab.

Let me know what you think Hometown.

shorty headers , bassonii (i butchered that one) makes ypipe with cat for CA , and any type of exhaust from there back (split and reuse duals) . What about all pumps and lines ect for emmisions.. you will need all that working for emmisions.

thanks lost. i will look into the bassani's. as for the smog pumps/egr/etc, it looks like its all there, just most of it not hooked up. i hope nothing is missing, as i suspect that equipment is expensive.

checked http://www.bassani.com and it appears they don't equip Ford F350's prior to 1999.

ok. i brought the truck over to the local exhaust shop. the guys were working on a harley and hummer in the bays . . . pricey vehicles compared to my 1991 F350.

i popped the hood and told the tech i need a smog legal exhaust system from front to back. he looked at the headers and said "no problem, you just need cats."

so i point at the headers, more specifically at what i think is the EGR (but may be the "air injection" - i don't know?!) and i tell him i don't think the headers are smog legal.

long pause . . . "yeah, maybe you need a whole new exhaust system."

um, i think i need to find another shop.

anyone has any suggestions for smog legal headers for my truck, or a line on some affordable exhaust manifolds and affordable cats, please give me the heads up.

I could be wrong on this ss someone chime inand correct me if needed, but on the 91 as far as exhaust goes you just need the CAT's. The headers are fine. A buddy of mine has pretty much same set up. He run those crazy Doug Thorley (spelled something like that) long tube headers with to high flow cats from summitracing.com . He passes no prob here in Utah. I would think if you had to you could fab a place in the header tube to fit the sensor.I would try to order a couple of cats and just bolt them in line with some clamps connect your smog crap and see if it will pass. My 93 passes with a gutted cat LOL.

you're not wrong about the tailpipe emissions test, but here in CA they are pretty strict and have a second component - the visual test - where they break out the schematic and actually check to make sure all the smog parts are on the car and functioning.

I wish it were so easy as just welding a connector onto the header for the egr. maybe it's worth a shot and it will slip by them.

thanks.
