I need to get headers for my truck; economy is an issue, and I have a chance to buy some from a friend. The price is right. They were made for a truck and engine like mine. My friend got them when his father died, and does not know the brand or the history. They have 1/4" flanges. They look like they are of acceptable quality, though I would like it very much if the flanges were heavier. There is no evident maker's mark or 50-state-smog-legal certification information, and I do not know if they are smog-legal. I'm in California. This is for a street truck.
Now, two (hopeful and likely silly) questions. Can anyone clue me in on the importance of those 1/4" flanges? And what will happen if I put these old headers on my truck and take it in to get it smog certified? I have no good idea what the certification process involves.
