I have a 1984 f250 diesel dually truck. Problem is this: Ill be driving down the road, hit a small bump (or maybe just a TINY dip) and the truck will shut off. The ignition switch wont stay on the start position. I just replaced the ignition cylinder, and the problem is still there! I dont know anything about the way the ignition works, and my manuals dont really cover this topic well. Does anyone have any clue what this could be? I need to fix it ASAP, as I tow a trailer, and this is DANGEROUS! Thanks for the help. -Mike
Your ignition switch may be out of adjustment. You may just want to put a new one in anyway and see if it fixes it.
The ignition switch is mounted on top of the column, underneath the dash. It sounds like a unnecesary step, but disconnecting the column from the dash and lowering it to get to the switch does help.
The new switch will come with a pin installed. Leave the pin installed till you get the lever arm inserted in the new switch, and the switch bolted down. Then pull the pin.
The Ignition switch sounds worn out to me. Too easy to turn, or out of adjustment slightly as franklin says...
Also how many keys do you have on your key ring? Too many keys on the key ring will weigh down on the ignition cylinder, causing wear and the potential for this problem to occur.
As a rule of thumb, you should only have your truck keys on one ring, and house keys and all other keys on the other, to prevent such wear and damage.
My truck key ring has only 3 keys on it. Ignition, door, and gas caps, as example etc...
Thanks for the quick/good help guys. Turns out it was the switch. It was seperated and busted pretty badly! Gotta love quick cheap fixes! Never thought about the weight of a key ring before (mine has like 13 keys and is heavy!) Makes sense.
