When i start my truck,
it starts just fine,
but if i have the headlights on,
then turn the truck off with the ignition it stays running
until i turn the headlights off???
Please Help,
When you turn the key off and the engine stays running - do the wipers, radio, heater fan, etc. also remain operative? Or is all that electrical stuff inoperable (as it should be) but just the engine stays running?
Legoman - Welcome to FTE! And please excuse our moderator for not welcoming you himself - he was probably high on cleaning fumes.
However, you do need to answer his questions as he is implying there may be a problem in the switch or its adjustment. But if that doesn't lead anywhere slide under the dash and look at the wiring going to the headlight switch. That wiring is known to overheat and melt into surrounding wires. If it has melted to the wire going to the ignition it would do what you are experiencing.
High on cleaning fumes, eh? No, it was close to 1AM when I posted that...
I actually didn't do much cleaning this time, the maids are keeping up in an "OK" fashion... so I did some house maintenance stuff - re-hang a falling-down gutter, re-installed a lamppost, stuff like that.
My questions to him - does the other electrical stuff work or not - is to try and get an idea of where the problem may be... if all that stuff still works when turning the key to OFF, the problem is definitely in that switch area. But if it's just the engine staying powered, well, that opens up all kinds of possibilities (as I'm sure you can image).

I think you are still suffering from staying up late. I knew where you were going, and said as much. And you are right - if things are still powered when the key is off then it is probably an ignition switch problem.
yes everythign electronicall works fine
radio,
heat,
dash lights
interior lights
dome light
its all working properally
but idk why the engine stays running with the headlight switch on
when i take the key out of the ignition and turn the headlights off the engine shuts off

Did you do what I suggested? If not I don't have any more suggestions. The headlights are powered all the time, and if that wire melts into the ignition wire it would run with the key off and headlights on.
no worries i fixed it today i had a split wired (not melted) on the cluster-plug
shorting out so i cut it and soldered it and elec-taped it and now everything is working like a champ

I don't fully understand what was going on, but glad you got it fixed.
