i'm having problems with my ignition system and need some help. When I take the ignition switch to start the truck starts up, but when I release the switch the ingine turns off. Any suggestions?

Look at the switch, see if the wires have been spliced to the dash harness by using a pigtailed harness/plug.
If not, the original POS switch is still in place, replace it as it was notorious for shorting out and catching FIRE!
No recalls back then, dealers were supposed to notify customers of defective switch. Some did, some did not.

O!!! and trust Bill on that. A friend of mine 68' caught fire because of that darn switch and burnt to the ground. Once it gets started - hard to put it out. Sad thing was he had just pulled out his floor mounted extinguisher to install new carpet.
