When I start it and listen by the muffler, its kinda quiet and it sounds like an old train (if you have the muffler delete you probably know what I mean).
Then after a while of letting it sit (not sure how long, maybe a min or two), it just sounds like really loud air is rushing through and out the pipe....This must be the high idle? Haven't compared the rpm's.
That would be the RPMs rising along with the EBPV closing, restricting exhaust flow. That's what gives it the loud sucking/wooshing sound out of the exhaust.
Yep to all of the above. It is a diesel and when it's cold it will smoke. The high idle and EBPV waits for the GPs to cycle off, then they come on. Big white cloud is OK if it is temporary, man it's cold. Excessive romping is not. All will romp momentarily when cold but if it continues there is a problem. Look to GPs or GPR but romping does happen with regular dyno oil when it's really cold.
