I use to get 18 miles to a gallon towing or normal driving. Now that we have this low sulphur fuel I have dropped considerably. I don't have an exact number yet.
Anybody have any suggestios on this subject or is it just my truck. 1999 f-250 4WD 7.3L predator diablo tuner on 60HP setting and K&N air filter. Any suggestions appreciated.
First off, how are you calculating mileage? If you are reading the overhead console, you might as well forget about it being accurate, especially with a tuner installed.
Also, have you modded the fuel tank? If not, are you filling up until the nozzle automatically clicks off? Or are you dribbling the last few gallons in until you get diesel fuel in the filler neck?
All of these make a huge difference in how you calculate mileage, and if your calculations are accurate.
As far as improving mileage.... unfortunately there's not much you can do for winter blend diesel. Mileage suffers in the winter time. The usual stuff is keep rpm's under 2,000; egt's @ 600 or less. An economy tune can also help.
cant expect the truck to keep getting great mileage the older it gets, things wear like injectors which arent as effecient as they were brand new. 18mpg towing? towing what, a 5 by 8 foot trailer empty? there is no need to exagerate that much, everyone does a little with there mileage but come on.
o ya get rid of the k/n filter. and use an additive.
say no to K&N.........baaad for turbo............which can be bad on mileage.
check your compressor wheel, see if K&N has let in too much dirt. also
for the winter months, i use PS diesel Kleen in the white bottle every fill up, keeps fuel from gelling and gives you a 4 to 6 cetane boost while lubricating pump and injectors,
just some thoughts,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Have you been changing your fuel filter lately? The switch to ULSD can clean your tank and lines out clogging it prematurely. I just changed mine after 5K miles because I got down to 10-11 miles / gallons. I can immediately tell the difference.
I went and did this yesterday and found alot of the clamp were loose after tightening all the them she runs alot quieter, hopefully will see better performance as a result also. I went to pic up my TH today and no more screaming and hissing like a teapot
