My oil pan is always wet- maybe a drop every couple of hours?? I'm pretty sure it's the oil pan gasket, truck has 158,000 miles. I normally wouldn't worry, but I do want to maintain this truck to at least 400,000 miles. Should I do anything to prevent it from getting worse? I don't want to try to tighten the bolts, won't that possibly warp the pan and cause it to leak more? How about the magical oil stop leak stuff on the shelves. The last thing I want to do is pull the engine to change the pan gasket. Suggestions??
The oil additives or "high mileage" oils have chemicals that make your seals swell a bit, which in theory will seal the leak. I always thought this was bad because it causes ALL of the seals to swell, and eventually those seals will shrink back to normal and leak worse. (Save that trick for a vehicle you know will be departing your garage soon)
Basically, I would say if you want the truck to do 400k miles, don't scrimp on the maintenance. If it leaks, fix it.
Gee, don't you think it would be wise to at least put a wrench to the oil pan bolts to see if any might have vibrated loose? If you just bring them back near their proper torque spec they might quit seeping without damaging the pan. It would be worth a try. I have had several transmission pans loosen up that way...one had two bolts tight, another none out of what, 12, 14, 16 bolts?
(Side note: The oil pan on my Crown Vic. has rusted enough to seep. The shop that brought it to my attention (I already knew) quoted me a price of $700 or so to pull the engine and replace the pan. Supposedly not possible to change oil pan on Crn Vic any other way.)
I had a 99 SD before my 06 and found out that the oil pan problem is common on these trucks. The garage where I get my sticker was working on one and I asked. They said that the oil pans rust from the inside out and they have done many of them. Their cost to replace the oil pan was $2000.00 because you have to pull the engine.
Hopefully yours is a loose bolt, but I would keep an eye on it.. You don't want that to blow on you..
How the hell does a pan rust from the inside out?? I'm not questioning you donjammer- it's just that me be a corrosion control specialist, I've never heard of oil corroding anything!! Jeez, I hope that don't happen. I'll take leave and fix the damn thing myself, 'cause the wife won't let me put anymore into the truck
From water in the oil ......LOL
They rust from the outside I just cleaned and painted mine. 7.3's can leak in the rear on that high pressure line and leak down on the back of the engine also..
I got one that has been leaking since i bought the truck 6 months ago. Mine seeps really bad tell I am down a half a quart and then, it pretty much stops. I have been looking at it for a while, but don't dare attempt to fix it, tell I have to. I have tried to torque the bolts down, but you can only get to some, so I am chit out of luck! Let me know if there is someone with a miracle fix!!!!
Well its all welded and leak free. I made a patch and welded over the 3 holes that were behind the exhaust pipe. Also changed the never get em out o2 sensors.. Boy were they in there. Neither one had any threads left,
