Should you ever change to a heavier oil?

My question is that my 2000 Expedition with 150,000 miles is buring about a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. I am using Mobile 1 Extended 15,000 miles SYN. Specifed oil weight is 5W30W but during the life of an engine, should you change to a heavier oil to compensate for the wear? Auto gut suggested going back to dino because it would be thicker but why not go with a heavier SYN?

I would try a heavier oil as it should help reduce consumption. It would be nice to know what the oil pressure is with the current oil compared to spec oil pressure and with the heavier oil.

Why is a quart every 2000 considered a big deal? If there are no external leaks, twice that much would be reason for concern. I hope you are actually extending your drain intervals with the EP formula, and not just spending the extra money as "insurance".

Smoke, low oil pressure or noises would be a reason to increase viscosity, not your situation.

Well you might want to switch to regular M1 for starters because 7 quarts of make-up oil in 15K is way too much. You're not gaining anything here. Honestly you'd be better off in this situation switching to Motorcraft and dropping it every 4K. Thicker oil may help here but not enough to keep you on extended OCIs. If you did go with M1 you might want to go 8-9K and use some mobil 5000 for make-up oil. You've got to be paying a ton in oil here.

I agree wholeheartily with Jim on this one. In fact, 150,000 of faithful service, having to add a quart of oil between OCI's would not bother be a bit. in fact, the "added" quart would simply be giving the oil already there a quick shot of new additives, ect.

Yeah, 2000 miles and add a quart, i would not mind one bit. It would give me something to do, while I was waiting for my wife "to do one more thing before we leave" when I am waiting in the van to go somewhere.

I have three vehicles. One consumes a quart every 1300 miles, another every 2000 miles, and the F150 a quart every 5000 miles. While I have fun topping up, it would be nice to reduce the consumption on the first two. He really does not have a problem, but then, I see no problem with trying to reduce consumption, to a degree. Would not want to run 15w50, but 5w40 might be a fine choice, especially since he is using M1, which tends to run a bit on the thin side.
