Hey fellow truckers I have a ? to whether or not to use syn oil in my 96 xlt 4.0L 5 spd w/100k miles on it, i just bought it and was wondering if syn would be a good investment and is it a good idea to change oil in mid-stream sort to speak. I drive maybe 500 miles a month and also change tranny to syn.
synthetic should be good. i had synthetic mercon or equivalent fluid changed at the interval because it was only $40 more and it gives much smoother shifts when i floor it.
Actually, there are many opinions as to the virtues of synthetic oil. My position is if you plan to change the oil at normal intervals and use the truck in non-extreme conditions, dino oil will perform just as well as synthetic. If you're interested in extending drain intervals or really flog the truck you may be a good syn candidate.
Just a word of caution, however, I would not consider extended change intervals without also doing regular oil analysis.
what or who does oil analysis, I never had it done....curious is what I am, I asume it reads whats in your oil at xxx miles.
And as far has tranny is concerned what is a good weight to use?
Check your owner's manual - I think you'll need Mercon. This is one of the areas I think syn is a great choice. Mobil makes a nice synthetic ATF that many have used with great success.
As far as oil analysis goes, check out Blackstone Labs here.

Don't think in terms of weight, think in terms of specs. Like oppy says, your tranny requires "MERCON" type transmission fluid. Same thing goes in your transfer case. So make sure whatever brand of fluid you choose, that it's Mercon rated. There are several good conventional fluids and synthetics available that fit the bill.
I swapped my 95 4.0 over to synthetic at 131,000 miles. I put the syn in it, drove for 2k miles, then changed the filter, added a quart, drove for another 2k miles, put one last filter on it, and I was going to drive for 5k miles, then change it out. I sold the truck before the 5k was up. I cut open the two filters I pulled off, to check to see if there was any sludge, I did not see any.
I experienced no leaks, and the Explorer did not burn any oil.
