1997 F-250HD, 7.3L Powerstroke, with a 5spd. I just got her, and she's beautiful!! I've crawled all around under the truck and can find no oil leaks or anything. My problem is that I'm leaving in the morning for a 6-day visiting road trip (You know how wives are about their relatives!!!) which should take me about 1500 miles. I have no idea what type of oil (dino or syn), brand, or weight oil the previous owner used in this truck. There's no sticker on the w/s, no info in the glove box, no nothin'! I've always been told that it can potentially be hard on an engine to switch brands, weights, etc. and I really want to get 350,000 miles out of this motor like I told my wife I would so she'd let me buy it I'm going to change the oil tonight, and I don't know what to use. If I use a syn and it leaks, that'll suck! If I use a dino and they've been using syn, that'll also suck! Somebody please tell me what you think I should do. I'd like advice on a brand, a type, and a weight. Also, is there a filter difference if you use a synthetic? Hurry!!
Well, call the ford dealer and ask him what to use.
OR better yet let him do it for the `first Time`...
That way if it is not correct its his...
That will buy you some time to get the True Owners manual and take it from there.
ps: from the dealer ...check the oil level BEFORE you leave ..Mine shorted me a 2/3 quart on my 1999 Contour!! he put in 5 the book says 5.8!!

Depending on the miles on your truck, you should not have a problem with synthetic. It shouldn't hurt to change brands in a truck that is relatively new. It is better in the long run to stick with one brand, but heck, you don't know what is in it now so go ahead, roll the dice, the odds are extremely small that you will have any trouble.
One word of CAUTION. Be sure whatever oil you use is API rated for DIESEL use, (API Cx). Some regular motor oils, including some synthetics, are not rated for diesel use and can cause damage. Diesels require more or different antifoaming agents and other things peculiar to diesels. With the wrong oil you risk causing the oil to foam up which can damage your injectors to start with and maybe worse in the long run.
Diesel rated oil has ratings starting with a C. Oil might meet requirements for S and C (gas and diesel). Check out the Chevron website http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/nafl/auto/content/motoroils.shtm
or any of the numerous other sites for info.
