Hello Every one. I have a 2002 7.3 4X4 crew cab with about 120k on it. This truck is getting 14-15 mpg, running light. I'm wondering how I can get more milage out of it. I was looking at Hypertech tuner???? The truck has enough power to pull the travel and stock trailers I haul, so my main objective is to increase economy. Thanks
I used the Hypertech on my new 2001 F350 7.3 bought just before Christmas. I set it to stage 3 per their recommendations and the extra power is totally amazing. At the same time, my city mileage increased from 15mpg to 18mpg and my highway mileage increased from 18mpg to 21mph (in Texas, 800ft elevation). I'm now getting over 400 miles on the stock 29 gallon fuel tank driving to and from work and get better mileage then my Ford Ranger with the 4.0L engine.
I'm have EGT + boost gauges coming this week along with a Silverline 4" dual SS exhaust so there shouldn't be any issues with high temperatures.
Programming was easy and it can be set back to stock any time. Only thing that can't be done is to change HP on-the-fly. The Hypertech needs to be hooked up again if less power is wanted.

hmmmm..... a little over 400mi on 29 gals isnt 18-21mpg range dont forget your trip computer will be thrown off by the programmer.....
400mi divided by 29gal = 13.79
a little over could mean say 450 or so 450mi divided by 29 gal = 15.5
do your calculations by manually those computers are liars!!!!!!
I'm curious then. Does the programmer change the fuel flow rate measurement to make the computer more wrong than it usually is?
I was relying on the computer display for my statements, hoping that at least the relative difference was significant, even if the absolute wasn't. I feel mileage has improved since the Hypertech based on two fillups done before doing the programming but admit that is a limited baseline.
Programmers, Chips and the like will not give you better Fuel Mileage Period!! They are designed to make more Power, they do that by increasing the Fuel Period!! My Hypertech PPIII cut my Mileage by about 1.1 MPG on average. I leave mine on stage 3 because I like it that way!!
But what about Ron's Power Stroke, who went from New Hampshire to Florida on 80econo at 70mph and managed to get 22mpg? Before, i can guarantee that he would have only gotten 17 or 18 miles to a gallon. He isn't the only one, just that he comes to mind first because 22mpg is an amazing number for these big wind sails.
Thanks everybody. I understand getting fuel/air mixture in and exaust gasses out as quicly as possible is the way to make HP. I'm really new to this so bare with me. Can you detune for better milage (every day driving), and then tune for HP when I'm towing? I've got to do better than 14-15mpg????
I have an early 99 4X4 crewcab Dually with the 6 speed,6637, straight piped, gauges, and the DP tuner with the stock, 40 tow, 60 tow, 80 econo, and 120 race. The best mileage I have been able to muster is 18 in the econo holding at 2000 RPM's with no load. When I am hauling my concrete form trailers my mileage goes way down but with the tunes I have for towing I can still fly down the road. The best way to increase your fuel mileage is to put an egg under your right foot and keep her at or below 2000 RPM's .
In the winter I average 15.5 & in the summer I average 17.
I've done 1 long road trip, all interstate in the summer & got 19.
Driving style seems to make the biggest difference.

strokin... when i 1st got my truck i got 17 around town and 21 on the big road..im still running stock 265 tires..with my mods listed below i drove to florida non stop both ways..only for fuel and tolls....in my 60 tow with crues set at 70 i got 22 to 23 mpg...on my way home i used the 80 econo and crues set for 80 to 85 and got 18 mpg...here in the white mountians with 15 minute warm ups morning and night..i use my 60 tow and im still getting 17 around town..im looking for that to get better this summer.less warm ups...ive only had my mods since november..

yes a tuner or chip will only give you more power..but with the power it makes the less throttle to get you going..with my mods and not useing OD i can slow down to 25 mph and step back on the throttle and get back to speed and never down shift..got to thank dp tuner for a great shift tune and bts for a great vb . (no down shift less RPM = less fuel) also 20 miles of my trip to work is a windy and curvy road..be for my mods i was forsed to shut off my OD cause it would always down shift..now in my 60 tow i can keep my truck above 45 in over drive. 45 and under OD will go to drive but with my tune i can drive that strech of road in OD now (OD less rpm but more power to hold the speed + no down shift less rpm less throttle = less fuel use..)all that adds up to less fuel going into my tank come pay day..

i believe hypertech is one chip you buy for any ford psd...a dp is a custom made tuner for your pcm.pluss dp does tuneing on the trans to put the added power to the ground..its .
not just made for any ford psd..its just like putting in a new pcm in you truck..where as your hyperteck lies to the pcm and forses it to dump more fuel to make more power and makes it run hotter EGT's ..it does nothing to the trans but stress it.and make it slip more...and that will make mpg suck...

Not entirely true. I run a Supertuner in tow-safe (60 HP) and my city mileage went up by 0.5 mpg, highway by about 1.5 mpg. More efficient shift points/tighter shifts and no more downshifting in light acceleration. Now the 80 HP setting did decrease the city mileage slightly, but I expected that. And no I don't go by the console display (it shows anywhere from 19 to 22 - yeah right), I use actual miles traveled.
