I just vented my crank case to near the rear axle with a 3/4 rubber hose. The only complaint I have is that when I stop and get out with the engine idleing...depending on the direction and speed of the wind...emmissions from that thing are rank. Is there anyway to reduce the smell without running it through the engine...like redirecting to the down pipe or something.
No, the smell is always rank. Best to put it as far away from the cab as possible.
For those who do vent it into the exhaust, don't put it in the downpipe either. That will cause too much backpressure in the crankcase and cause some nice oil leaks.
Or you could do a closed CCV system with a filter and return to the intake.
I will add this....At 285K I changed my water pump. After reading everything about oil in the intercooler, boots, etc I decided to do the mod myself. To my surprise, I got less than a teaspoon of oil out of the intercooler after draining it overnight. No, I'll keep the CCV system the way it is. To eliminate the boots from coming off at high boost i used Permatex brush on gasket maker at all the boot connections. I've put 7k on the truck since with no dusty oil tell tale at the intercooler boots. To top that, I also saw a increase in top end boost and lower EGT's across the board. The permatex sealing boost leaks. The only thing I will do for preventative maintenance is remove the intercooler and clean out once a year. I believe that the oily film inside is detrimental to proper heat transfer. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
I like the Idea of the closed system. As far as boots popping off, I welded a bead around the end of all my IC pipes...so I don't think this is a problem. I didn't know if the oil could plug my IC or deteriorat the boots some how.
hell, i just have the ccv open to air right at the valv cover. I reversed the cap on the cover an have the rubber elbo facing to the side, I will eventually add a longer hose. so far i have gone almost 1000 miles like this, windows up, down, heat on....just now an then i get a wiff in trafic.
The only way to really get rid of the smell is to return it to the intake. Piping it into the exhaust will certainly help as the normal exhaust smell will disguise it. I really don't think the smell is that bad, myself. Mine goes to the rear bumper, and even walking around back there I don't notice it until I put my nose right down within a couple feet of it and sniff at it.
