cold starting noises

cold starting noises
My truck makes a similar when real cold, about zero or so.

But it only lasts for about 2 seconds at most I would say, just when you first turn it over.
If I pulg the block heater in it does not do it.
Mine did it agian today for about 3 seconds or so, it is 5 F out.
Also my dad has the same truck and his did not make any noises.
Both sat for the same amount of time.
Any one else experince this noise?
Anybody know what it might be/ how to fix it if there is a fix?
I know that some noise is normal when it is realy cold out, but why would mine do it and mine dads not?

Hey Josh,
I'd expect the noise to be in the same general location as what was stated in the mirror post (the link). I'd try to have someone else start it on these cold mornings, and place your head/stethoscope in the engine compartment (on the stationary items of course) and listen. Unless it is really that obvious.
Fwiw... my power invertor's Fan makes nearly the same type of noise when being turned on first thing (on a colder morning) but it lasts maybe 2-3mins at the most.

Update
Well I went to the dealer yesterday to get some free oil change coupons and I asked my service adviser about the noise. And this is what he told me. That Ford knows about the noise on cold start up at 5f or below. He said that their have been a lot of trucks in lately with it being so cold with the noise. Said that Ford knows about the noise but does not know what the noise is being produced from or have a fix yet. Then I told him that my truck makes the noise and my dad’s truck does not, he looked at me like I was speaking in a different language. Said that’s weird and that my dads truck will probably start to make the noise too….I thought ya right. Then said that their “service guys” think that it is something to do with the PVC something or another. Could it?
I forgot to ask him if it could have been the fan cultch though. Do they make noise?
But it sounds like a load of BS to me with ford knowing about it and everything…and with his response when I told him about my dad’s truck not doing it.
The Stealership is moving at the end of the month and is already laying people off, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it???

My truck has been doing the same thing. It has been 0 in the mornings lately. I believe it is something to do with the power steering system. This morning when I started it up to let it warm up, I accidentally caught the steering wheel with my sleeve. I noticed the noise went away when I turned the steering wheel. Maybe this will help you with your truck's noise? Perhaps the fluid is gelling up in the pump? Like you, this only lasts a few seconds. Hope this helps...

etk, that is another interesting observation. Either it has something to do with the power steering, or else the load on the serpentine belt changed and that intern changed the noise on another engine accessory like the alternator or the tensioner pulley. Well the more information the better.

My '04 5.4L did exactly the same thing, only when cold, and I also heard it was the alternator or thought it might be the belt. Did it from the first cold day I had it.
Here's the wierd thing...the dealer just did the cam phasers under warranty (I did not mention this noise at all, just the cam phaser tap, since they had refused to look into this noise before under the claim that it was a belt and not covered) and the truck is now completely quiet on cold starts. No tap and no whine. I have no idea why, other than they had some of the serpentine components disassembled and reassembled and maybe they did something I'm not aware of.

I have had the same problem. On my 99' with the 4.6 and now my new Lariat with the 5.4. My experience was with the very low temperatures and only after sitting overnight. It was a whiring gear pump like noise. Looked at idler pulleys, alternator, steering pump, drove me nuts. Finally I changed to Mobil 1 and problem disappeared on my 99' 4.6 My 07' was doing the same thing with the factory oil, changed again to Mobil 1 again problem solved. My guess is the oil pump is cavitating on startup with the thick cold oil. Mobil 1 (any 100% synthetic) has better cold temp. flow properties.
